Hi guys 'n' gals

Just posting to see if any one knows the rules on start up concerning the headsets. Where i work we have not been shown how to use headsets and when i question them about it, i get the 'you dont need to know' kinda answer. The only reason i am concerned that i should know this is becasue, for example, i had to do a start up on a CRJ the other day and the angle that the sun was at (regardless of where i stood) made it impossible to see the crew (like looking at a mirror:uhoh: ) I could see the occasional movement from in the cock pit but could not make it out...if the capt had done the 'thumbs down' at any point i would of assumed it was thumbs up and walked off!

If i had been shown how to use the headsets i would not be 'guessing' whislt doing the start ups which is not good at all!

Any info would be great on the matter!

What you are doing is illegal and in breach of CAA and JAR ops (UK ) rules and H & S. Under these conditions you should have a formal course and be supervised on a number of live a/c by a qualified headst operator. Do you use chocks ?

There is a start up sequence and you are reponsible for that and for a walkaround check prior to start up to ensure the integrety of the a/c, in addition to that done by flight crew.

You are the eyes and the ears for what is happening behind the a/c. If the a/c is tipo (taxi in- push out) you would also be responsible for overseeing the detachment of the towbar and the final clearance check with the crew.

Finally if it was to go pearshape and an incident occured you could be in court and ultimately in prison. These are a small number of the responsibilities, I do not do this function but have done and am employed in a ramp handling training department so for your own peace of mind I would get some instruction. I cannot imagine that flt crew would be happy either.

I do all the checks around the aircraft etc and baggage holds but never been shown how to use the headsets on the dashes. Yes i do use the chocks so that bit is ok its just i feel sometimes i should be shown how to use the headsets in scenerios like the CRJ. Thanks for your help and i will get my company on to it:ok:
