Another vote for the A350 here, I flew JNB-LHR-JNB last month, by Virgin in Premium, a very nice experience!
I flew in a Lufthansa A380 FFM -JNB-FFM downstairs in Economy back in 2012..a very quiet aeroplane, but the seats were as hard as rock! down side is no A380 and arriving around 1000 rather than a little earlier - bit sporty if getting a domestic flight and intl is delayed for any reason. |

I've had the benefit through work of flying on all of these types in varying classes for many years up until Covid bit, and I have to say that my order of preference for long haul will always be A380, A350. 787, 757, A310/330, T7, 767 until a new or better aircraft becomes available.

We have flown 757 long haul a few times - first time for me was business class - which I did not like as it felt like we were in a cigar tube, every other occasion was cattle class which I found more comfortable, the last couple of trips was with Untied and they had obviously spent some money refurbishing the interiors and we were more than comfy flying Edinburgh - Dulles etc.

I was taken aback a couple of years ago, how quiet the A340 was - well, certainly in comparison to what I was expecting. I did LHR-CPT and back on SAA. But certainly comfort wise, the A380 takes some beating as does the A350. Certainly in the last few years of the BA 747, I always tried to avoid it and go for the B787 or the B777-300 if possible, purely because of IFE reliability!
I had the misfortune of a B767 LAS-YYZ trip a few years ago... not a nice aircraft to fly on in comparison to today's MH / LH offering. |

Agree, I take the JNB flight with the A380 as much as I can.
That said, I am flying Virgin at the end of May, as their A350 is on the LHR-JNB leg, and as I haven't flown on that ac type before, I am quite looking forward to it. |

I did some early hops in the Far East on ANA 787 and was not that impressed with the A/C, and have not flown on them since as the carrier’s I use normally do not use the type. Cheers Mr Mac |
Only flown on 787's twice - in 2018 we took a calculated risk and flew Norwegian from Gatwick out to Denver,Co (super cheap tickets :) ).The 787's were having many problems at that time esp engines so it was a risky proposition. As it happened - everything went ok,we flew out and back cattle class and the cabin/seats were 'ok' - the cabin crew were really good, iirc the food outbound was excellent but the food on the return leg was mediocre to say the least LOL.
We definitely enjoyed flying in the 'classic' 757 more than the 787. |
The only 78 that I have been on is VS. I have vowed never to fly their machine again until I can see out of the windows when I want to - without them having some cockamamie colour 'suite' to help me 'relax'.
Also, I felt no change from the lower cabin altitude. |
Landed at LHR this morning on the Virgin inbound from JNB (A350-1000). Quite full too; 291 pax on board. Some turbulence as usual over DRC etc, but as I was sitting near the wing, it wasn't too bad, and it is quiet. Can't remember how it compares to the 787.
Outbound I flew UC, but oh my, the set up was quite uncomfortable. The seat is angled towards the window, but the table isn't. I had some serious backache after 11 hours, as did a pax in front of me. That said, everything else was great. heard that BA cancelled one of their LHR-JNB flights, thankfully I have booked with Virgin for my flight back down in Sep. Unfortunately, I think they may change back to the 787 in September..ish. But yes, I do like the A350 |
