Nope, you can leave the UK at any time during the quarantine period, you don't have to "serve" the full 14 days before leaving.

Not just the popular press, and not just at Dover - the USSR and GDR options have caused some hilarity amongst some of our local "expats" today who were trying to organise a brief run to the UK over the next few days and were trying to speed things up by doing paperwork ahead of time using the on-line version of the form. It seems to be an feature/artifact of whatever database is linked to the on-line version of the no doubt "world beating" form....

This is a minor matter, given that the outbound border has never been secured - so they don't know who is in the country or not. I seem to recall them talking about securing the outbound three years ago. So it is no surprise that nothing has happened. Fortunately, we are already a laughing stock in the world and cannot sink much lower.

It has always astounded me Pax - nearly 40 years ago I can remember going into Australia and everyone's passport was scanned in and out -

You know if the UK was a dangerous place - like an offshore oil rig, a coal mine or a building site - they'd have been dragged through the courts decades ago for not knowing who was in and who was out.

Yeah, the complain when people overstay their Visa - but they have no idea where they are! When i worked in Munich for 18 months, I had to register locally with my address and passport checked in and out each time looking at my residents permit. No problem.

But the Brits have never implemented this most basic bit of border control. Musn't drift too far off topic.

Where does one get the arrival form ? Are they handed out on the plane or are they part of check-in ?

This govt never wanted to implement this and any failings can be off loaded onto those who have to implement this system, usually, without much information (as in Leicester this week).

I thought the idea was that you filled in the form on-line and that it should already be in the appropriate database before the passenger arrives. You carry the form simply to prove that you have filled one in should anybody enquire.

My Granny doesn’t know what an online form is. There appears to be no paper alternative to the online form on the UK Govt website, what is she to do? Check into the nearest Care Home I presume.

Back in the 1950s my parents employed "Au-Pair" to help look after me. They were mainly from Switzerland. I seem to remember we had to take them to our local police station when they first arrived. Beyond that I'm not sure.
These days, despite there being no obvious check on departures I believe the transport operators (not just the airlines) submit passenger lists electronically (they do it inbound too). The problem is that although that might tell us who has oevrstayed it gives us no clue as to where they are.

Amusing to see the quarantine crumble, just as PPRuNers said it would.

That is correct, I enquired with Eurotunnel yesterday and was told there is no opportunity to fill out a hard copy. Should be entertaining when a Wallace Arnold bus turns up at Dover with half the PAX not having a smart phone and not having completed the online form out.

It's somehow so much what you expect from a a poorly thought out system, put in place by a Priti dim government minister.
