Arrecife Airport and TUI diversions.
Sitting inside because of the rain, here in Lanzarote on holiday, I've been entertaining myself by looking at arrivals into Arrecife on Flightradar. Yes, I know I'm sad!. Out of roughly 55 flights that were scheduled to gave landed by 15:30 today, 7 diverted to Fuertenventura. Of these 7, 4 were TUI flights.
Is there any particular reason why TUI aircraft are more likely to need to divert than those from other carriers? |
I can’t speak for TUI specifically, but Lanzarote has a runway that becomes performance limited when wet for northerly departures. Aircraft departing on longer routings will be carrying more fuel, and hence are more limited than those on shorter routings due to their higher weight. It makes no sense to land at an airport that you may not be able to depart from again before the crew run out of duty hours. |
Likely TUI (and its various airlines) will have it's own SOPs for ACE and bad wx
7 diversions - 4 were TUI - the 3 others thought the same - so ACE was a no go (probably a TUI day lol) Thursdays and Mondays were historically UK-ACE package charter days (likewise TUES/FRI is a TFS day and MON/THURS was a LPA day FUE was WEDS and SATS) not quite so rigid nowadays because of the all low-co's |

Rain? In Lanzarote? You must be really unlucky.......
Getting back to the issue of the diversions, I think TUI were slightly unlucky , as they had two flights scheduled to land within 15 minutes of each other, which coincided with a pulse of bad weather, hence the diversions. |

Arrivals to the Southerly runway ( 21) always an issue in poor weather due to terrain allied to the fact its not a particularly long runway. ILS approach to 03 should not be an issue unless you are unlucky enough to arrive in torrential rain and/or turbulence or crosswinds on or above limits. Departures on 03 can be a problem for the 737 depending upon conditions requiring a 21 take-off against the traffic flow. 757 usually has no performance issues at all so its just a question of weather unless you are at the back end of an arrival stream.

Yeah, TUI had a run of bad luck yestersay afternoon with the worst of the weather - purely down to timings. We (just) managed to get in shortly after they had changed from 21 to 03. Fully expected to end up in FUE after holding for a while. |
