UAE - New advance registration of medications requirement

According to the UK FCO travel advice, ALL travellers to and through the UAE must now register any medications in advance. Note this applies to ALL medications, and to both Arriving and Transit passengers.
Entry requirements section (Medication) - updated information and advice following an announcement by the UAE Ministry of Health that all tourists and residents entering the UAE will be required to complete an electronic form to obtain online approval to carry medication for personal use, prior to entering the country; Health section - revised guidance on sources of health information before travel

This article is clearer about the new legislation than the UK FCO alert:

E-Approval Required Before Bringing Personal Medicines to UAE Dubai OFW

Note that to register you have to set up an account with the UAE Ministry of Health, which is probably not compliant with European data protection standards.

Thanks for the heads up.

Sounds like the usual FCO warnings... I am sure that it is true but i dont believe the UAE will check all passengers... it just gives Immigration another excuse to throw the book at you if they don't like your attitude

Seems to me to be a very good way of getting people to stop visiting and transiting. Lunacy!

The practical advice seems to be that transit pax are unlikely to be monitored, but that they (and terminating pax) would be best advised to take their prescription details and/or the original packaging for any medication. One common medication that you should not carry is codeine, which is apparently illegal in the UAE.

As I said, lunacy. Codeine has other benefits beyond just pain killing.

Have absolutely no interest in going next nor near the Emirates and this certainly wouldn't persuade me otherwise.

Best to check your medication as Codeine is often in a combination and, if in a minority, may not be reflected in the name or front packaging. For example, the American brand Tylenol is a co-codamol formulation which always containes codeine.

I mentioned this in the office today and someone said the UAE had occasionally arrested UK visitors who had arrived with a load of apparently legal drugs the authorities thought might be for resale or something nefarious.......

So this may be a way of cutti9 that trade????

Codeine is easily processed into hard drugs, which is why there is a ban. There's an alternative to codeine for all its benefits.

Its funny because the GCC didn't design its legal system to attract you, or convince you so you won't be missed.

All evidence to the contrary - its very popular place amongst people who don't think they should be in charge 'as they know better'.

Rush2112 1st Nov 2018 12:50

Wasn't this always the case?

SpringHeeledJack 1st Nov 2018 15:07

So for all the transit passengers that are enticed through the GCC and onwards every day (not leaving the airport), there will be consequences if they don't declare their personal medications ?

Wouldn’t go within the proverbial country mile of the place....
