I haven't looked lately, but it used to be a cheap way to get to Europe from the U.S. But you had to do a layover in Iceland in at least one direction (so they could suck some tourist money out of you).

Actually, the top airport in the analysis was Bristol, with 94.4% on-time performance. Another 14 airports did better than Munich's 89.0% (it was top in the "Large Airports" category).

There are so many variables involved in on-time performance that such a list is meaningless.
You could sit on a taxiway at a departure airport with gorgeous weather bound for a destination that's cool but dry, having plenty of runways and ATC that knows how to keep things moving and still experiece substantial delays.
Been there, done that, due to weather conditions elsewhere that made issuing our clearance a low priority.
Instead of some list, the sensible traveler needs to try to be aware of those airports most subject to weather delays and consequent late day cancellations in any given season as well as rebook opportunities available at any given station.
Savy travelers already know this and don't rely upon some list of dubious value to guide them in their selections of airports and airlines.
I'd rather be trying to get to my destination from ATL in a delay and cancellation situation than from MSP, for example.
Lots more flights, better weather and plenty of concrete available for operations, although not on the list.

These figures and numbers are just for the bosses of the various places and carriers to pitch for a bigger bonus. They have zero effect in the real world.

I view these 'statistics' with a certain cubit of salt. The ones doing this study have been around for less than a year, and there is no clear indication of how they rate safety. QF, at the top of the list ,is not free from serious incidents although no fatalities in the jet age.

Most punctual? Is it really up to one airport? Again, how do they measure this? It can get foggy up at Ludgate. Do they count cancellations?

In fact, given the usual suspects at the top of the list it makes you wonder if the criteria was not tailored to ensure that 'award winning' airlines score at the top.

I wonder how AUH scored on punctuality, that is not counting all those cancellations and diversions.

It's unfortunate that the thread seems to have got itself confused between a punctuality analysis and a safety study.

As far as the former is concerned, the methodology and data seem pretty sound, but I agree that the results need to be interpreted with caution.

As regards the safety study, it's put together by the Australian provincial newspaper that runs the airlineratings com website (generally regarded as a bit of a joke in the industry) so we probably shouldn't be too surprised that Qantas gets first place.

It's a good job Norwegian short haul and long haul are separate entities. If they were one I'd very much doubt they would have such good OTP.

Taking train from California to Chicago. I checked and they have a 46% on time record. Changed my car rental plans as I only had 45 mins to get to the rental office.
