As cabin crew I have had this issue on board and I have been happy to let the child keep the ear defenders on. I would rather have a calm child with calm parent who is there to assist them in any emergencies, than a flustered parent possibly having to physically restrain a very upset child. Most of the time the child is below the seat level so you don't get other pax going "but how come he's allowed to wear headphones..."
I think for the good of everyone a little common sense is sometimes needed, rather than blindly adhering to the letter of the law.

Thanks for the responses suggestions and good wishes.
I have emailed the airline and an waiting on a response.
Just for clarity. The ear defenders are not electronic so no issues from that perspective. Ideally he will wear them when boarding (they are as much a comforter as anything else), so no chance of hiding them (and their being day glo yellow!).

I have been a very frequent flyer for more than 20 years (perhaps a thousand flights, really lost count). So I have enough respect for the CC to not argue, deceive, or generally try to pee them off. So if it's "no" on the day then it's no and i will just have to deal with it.

Thanks WHBM, I had indeed meant a ROW near to Exit and not the seat nearest but had been typing too fast to actually put all the words down. With the last post from the O/P, it looks like matters are in hand. I really like the idea of Day-Glo Yellow and guess it also helps him to find them quickly if he has mislaid them.

It also made me think of adopting the idea: I would enjoy the world more if I could wear ear defenders every day. As it is, the closest I can get is ensuring that I never listen to any of our politicians! :ok:

Meridiana were FAB!

Hi,
I was very pleasantly surprised by Meridiana, no problems at all very understanding, no arguments, no additional stress, even introduced the captain!

Much, much, much better than my previous experiences with BA (which is quite sad as I love BA for business travel).

Thanks to all who responded.
