A friend who travels a lot to Japan tells me smoking is still allowed there in aircraft

JAL were one of the last major longhaul carriers to ban smoking (as I believe they've now done) - it wouldn't surprise me if they still allow it on internal flights. Some of my former colleagues used to do Oz trips on JAL because they couldn't face 14 hours without a coffin nail.
