PAX profiling to start in Finland
 

Finavia, an airport management and handling company in Finland, wants to select PAX for special screening based on religion, ethnic background and nationality should Finland adopt the new type scanners to be proposed by EU commission to the parliament.

According to the security manager of Finavia, Jyri Vikström, profiling is required as it would be unfeasible to scan every PAX with the new system as well as for the obvious reason, to lessen the hardship generated to the travelling public and aircrew alike.

The profiling would target certain groups that have been responsible for most of the terrorist attacks in the last 10 years as well as select PAX based on behaviour at the airport and combine certain existing travel profile (cash payment, 1 way ticket, no luggage etc).

About time someone came up with this in Finland, and in Europe. We have been appeasing the minorities for too long at the expense of majority population. Time to put an end to the hind kissing and start to talk about matters with their real names.

I havent decided if its relevant but does anyone know the security threat level in Finland right now?

Finns are flexible nation, so they will understand if you prefer gin&tonic or vodka instead of beer during the breakfast.

Idea is politically incorrect but simple and effective. Watch japanese and muslims. In last 100 years it was them.

Why don't they just do it the other way around? Profile and eliminate all the people who are, quite obviously, no risk and then concentrate on the remainining (what?) .05%

All those links also say that in order to start the profiling, officially at least, Finland would need European Union approval :hmm: Seems nothing can be done without the sayso of Brussels these days. I´m convinced, though, that just about everyone working in airport security already is doing some mental profiling inside their own heads, if they have half a brain - so who needs permission to do so anyway?

As far as "threat level" in Finland at the moment, nothing out of the ordinary, no heightened police presence or anything of the sort, just business as usual.

Ah, at last someone is realising that profiling can be inclusive or exclusive so they can profile the family with three kids who go to Australia every Xmas with both parents all having totally innocent passports to be subject to very minmal checks and even "Did you pack the bags yourself" will be unlikely to trigger the evacuation of T5!!

More sense at the sharp end please, [not the aircraft, Westminster]

From a contact on another Forum [a Finn living in the EU, with whom I have shared a few beers] I'm aware that the Finns have a different way of thinking and doing things.

Sadly, the "Inclusive" Brussels beauracracy [or however you spell that word] have to cater for everyone, regardless of common sense.

"Dark-skinned man in Turban or with Beard" or "White Anglo-Saxon Female OAP"? Hardly rocket science, is it? Not forgetting the one-way ticket, no baggage ... and NO Duty-Free, of course!

The latest news is, the security manager at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, who gave the interview on which the earlier news is based, now denies having said that profiling would be based on religion, ethnic origin or nationality. Instead, he now says, "behavior at the airport" would be what decides which passengers will be taken aside to be screened and/or searched. Obviously he touched a nerve somewhere.

Very sad that the man has obviously got scared of the public discussion generated by the interview. Poor ba.stard. I am sure that someone is going to ask for his head for coming up with the only idea that would be an effective measure against terrorism. Sad thing is that had he kept it under wraps they could have implemented profiling quietly. Now since the threehuggers and PC nuts are out, not a fat chance.

World has gone nuts with this PC garbage. While whole nations are terrorised by the few, the majority is made to suffer and inconvenienced in every day life not to hurt the feelings and not to sound discriminating against these minorities.

If these terrorists where Swedish or Irish. Not one person would raise their voice if these groups where pinpointed as a security threat and they would be subject to special measure. But since we are mostly talking about a certain religion, we are to remain nice and appeasing, to understand them and to be happy to have such cultural diversity. We have a word for this and back home it is called "Finlandization". I just call it plain and simple stupidity.

It is about time that someone had the balls to state that profiling is needed but I am surprised it was someone in Finland.

But a few points:

- will profiling reduce the need to inconsistent, counterproductive and plain silly and suureal rules such as the liquids ban
- how will a security company like ISS in Finland (who are really a cleaning and office srevices company) get trained and educated security staff. Helsinki Vantaa (EFHK/HEL) security is one of the worst for their staffs behaviour to passengers though not always to crew fortunately.
- will any of this speed up security?

In the end as it has been pointed out in various security blogs (Schneier on Security is a good one) and also by various members of the US intelligence community (see the mentioned blog for a link) that airport security is done all wrong in the first place. Taking liquids and restricting things which can easily be bought airside does not help "security" at all.
