Easy Rewrites Law

A little gem in the Sunday Times Travel section today....

Someone protested although she had paid for Easyjet's priority boarding, the ground staff did nothing to honour that and she had to fight her way on with the scrum in the usual way.

Well, we've all been there, haven't we, and we know better than to buy this particular scam. I have huge sympathy with the people at the back of the mob, pathetically asking to be let through when the staff call for "Priority Boarding" passengers, but I have no wish to waste my money and join them.

But it was Easyjet's quoted response that I loved. They said, in effect, that the money paid for this service is not refundable because they tell you that when you pay, whether or not they make it happen for the buyer. Then they graciously said they would refund her money on this occasion, but never again.

Now, I see a whole new field of opportunity. We take advance payments for lots of things in our business, which is training. We never knew that so long as we put "non-refundable" in the small print we're under no obligation to provide the service. What fools we have been; always doing our best to fulfil the obligation.

Thank you, Easyjet. We learn something new every day.

Basic Law of Contract I would have thought: the offer, the acceptance and consideration.

The flaws of 'Priority Boarding' were demonstrated at Luton when we had to bus it to the a/c. The 'P. B.'s were given priority boarding the bus but boarding the a/c was first come etc. In fairness to Easy the liklihood of this happening is mentioned, I believe.

Speedy Boarding! I wish I had never heard of it or paid up front for a years membership for the family.

On our recent trip to TFS my son of 9 was trampled under foot by non-Speedy Boarders who were making the mad rush from bus to aircraft without apology or concern by those involved.

On the return to LGW I was threatened by violence by someone in a wheelchair who thought that he was a priority boarder and pushed aside by at least ten people accompanying one child in buggy.

The concept is a good one if only it was carried through by the staff and the idea was explained fully to non Speedy Boarders.

The fun of modern day air travel could have very serious consequences.

...and then the first bus with the speedy boarders and the "A" people breaks down mid transfer to aircraft, so the second bus, with them who shall be last on board, gets to the aircraft first and discharges it's contents.

Brings a whole new meaning to "those who would be first shall be last and they who were last shall be first".
