My wife and I will shortly be taking a rather long flight from Heathrow to Auckland with our twin babies.

My wife will obviously be doing her best to produce the stuff herself but with twins you normally need to top this up so I've been trying to find whether the liquid rule is flexed for baby formula as we could need rather a lot to get them through a 24+ hour long flight.

I know that they will let you through if you have a sip yourself but what about unopened cartons? Formula only stays fresh for a few hours once opened unless it is refrigerated so opening the packs and taking a sip isn't really do-able.

Alternatively does anyone know if you can buy the stuff on the other side of security?

Most baby shops will be able to sell you a device consisting of 5 or six interlocked containers. Into these you measure the formula powder; one container for each bottle.

On board, empty the contents of one container into the bottle and ask the CS to fill with hot water. They are normally happy to oblige. Am assured water on board is sterilised and have done many, many hours using this system.

PS. Plan to feed sprogs on decent; it helps them clear their ears.

I am very lucky that I have been breastfeeding for the last 8 months so my milk is ready for use and no tasting required at security!!! speaking about BAA at LGW, they never asked me to open any sealed fruit pots for my baby.

They did ask me to taste the boiled water though, which I always keep in a bottle in my bag in case he gets thirsty.
Boots sell all sorts of baby food airside. However, the most economical way of doing it is this:

Fill up 3-4 bootles, how many you need, with the water ready for the formula powder. Then get one of this:

it can contain up to 4 x 7oz powder formula doses. All you have to do is show them you can taste the water, seal the bottle again and when you need it just add the content of one formula compartment, shake, heat (or not, depending what your baby is used to) and feed!!! I personally would provide my own water and would not ask the crew for hot water on the plane, as the quality of it is debatable, especially for a little baby (being crew myself I can assure you it's not sterile at all!)

This way, although we could argue that you could "contaminate" the water when you taste it (which would be like kissing your baby though if you know what I mean), you can quickly make a fresh feed each time.:ok:

Goodness me FBW, has it really been 8 months? Good on ya BTW.

Back on track, I would recommend buying formula airside, but where are you transiting, will you need to open the formula there? If so get yourself some steribottles from boots and then you can decant it later in your journey. Good luck.:ok:

Good advice Lexxity!! I forgot about disposable sterile bottles!
Also some mineral still water can be used for making up formula too, but I do not know if Boots or any other company sell that airside!

Family is well here, we're sticking with one, I wouldn't have the energy for another right now, the twos are currently terrible!:}

Thanks for the info - they have made the whole travelling with kids thing very hard with this stupid liquid rule haven't they!

They have, but one thing that will make life easier is if they relax the one item of handbaggage rule, toys take up a lot of space!
