currently saying on cnn.com:

Meanwhile, heightened security measures were in place at London's Heathrow Airport on Tuesday following the discovery of a suspicious bag.
...
Travelers at Heathrow were warned to expect delays as authorities introduced measures including "secondary searches" of departing passengers in response to the discovery of the suspicious bag at the airport's Terminal 4.
"Contingency plans have now been activated to ensure that we are able to effectively manage the increase in resource that this secondary search requires," the British Aviation Authority said in a statement. "We are working with the police to bring a swift resolution to the incident."

I know terminal four has been evacuated for a security alert, but are there any details as to why?

Llademos 3rd Jul 2007 14:35

Point5 ... not really. A security alert can cover all manner of things, from an unattended bag to a car trying to get in.

u-b-f ... something to do with a transfer bag, from the rumour mill. All T4 staff and pax airside evacuated and having to rescreen again. Most of the afternoon T4 departures now cancelled as a result.

All shorthaul flights from Terminal 4 have been cancelled for the rest of the day. All long-haul flights until 9pm. Not expecting an early resolution...

Apparently also boarding planes with police & sniffer dogs.

well.......I heard that a pax was being routinely screened and following x-ray procedures was selected for a bag search. As the security operative turned away to summons help, the pax (unseen) picked up the bag and walked off into the departure area. Cue, panic.

What a mess. Over 70 flights cancelled already, including most trans-Atlantic flights. Which, of course, means no flights back. This will take days to sort out, given the high booking rates for this time of the year.

:ugh:
Looks like it's going to be another Summer of discontent. Marquees, blankets and more mountains of bags. But if that means we all stay safe, then so be it.
