Forced wearing of masks - what's your opinion?

JetBlue is forcing masks on all pax. What's your opinion? Other airlines are offering masks to pax. Do you fly JetBlue or opt for another airline?

Wear the mask. It cuts down on transmission. It's not hard or difficult to wear a mask.

If you are thinking of not flying on an airline because you don't want to wear a mask frankly you shouldn't be allowed on any public transport right now.

Logistics? Not enough masks in the world for Health Care Professionals let alone the General Public?

FWIW details of the start easing of the confinement ( lockdown) in France were announced two days back... one item was TFN wearing of masks on public transport will be mandatory - I don't think aircraft got a mention...(not that there are many flying around anyway).

"Logistics? Not enough masks in the world for Health Care Professionals let alone the General Public?"

Which is the reason the UK dare not suggest masks for the public - just not enough to go round............

And germany requires and suggests so called "community masks" or "mouth and nose coverings", so not certified masks, just to reduce the spread of small droplets, but not designed to protect the wearer. Same reason here, not enough certified masks for all. By the way, Lufthansa requires the passengers to wear a mask as well, however, they have to bring their own mask as far as i know.

HM Govt has followed the advice from WHO and our own SAGE team with their advice that is to only to wear a correct type of PPE mask when you are treating/caring for patients who are or maybe sick with Covid-19
And to wear a mask if you are sick, or have symptoms (but you should be at home anyway)

Wearing a home made or incorrect mask gives little or no protection from asymptomatic Covid-19 sufferers who are out and about in public and can spread the virus.
If you can blow out a lit match through your mask then it is NO good at all either in stopping spreading, or by protecting you.

If the HM Govt does change it's policy then frankly only the correct PPE mask worn will save folk from the risk of asymptomatic Covid-19 sufferers passing on more infections.
Thus the Stay at Home mantra.

Scotland has gone ahead and done its own mask thing which in a 4 country devolved Union may pose some consternation.

And No, if 60 million UK population suddenly need correct PPE mask then where will we get those in a hurry - impossible

If they still serve food and drink (and long haul at least, they will do that), you will have to take the mask off.

Therefore is there any point?

Yes. For 90% of the journey you will be wearing a mask and we know that the probability of infection is quantity related.

WHO and SAGE have been notable for their competence in dealing with the pandemic ?????
Of course what should have happened was that masks should have been introduced on flights from China and then elsewhere as they became available. I was given a free mask by my local council the other day, so supply has obviously eased significantly.

The Official NHS masks require a "Fit Test". Basically, they fit one on you, and then put some smelly/tasty stuff near you. If you can either taste or smell the stuff, the mask isn't working.

Don't just dump a mask on your face.

If it was up to me, I would call it the fart test, but the NHS insist on calling it a Fit test.

I don't see the point in the wider population pretending to themselves that they are wearing a mask and thereby doing anything useful.

Half don't appear capable of getting a mask to cover both nose and mouth, let alone understand the purpose of the "underwire" material to form it around the nose - most I have seen wear this bit under the chin. Presumably for more uplift? The others that are making their own masks out of scarfs and the like are broadly picking he wrong thing to use most of the women seem to be picking the most holey, gauzy light material possible. Great for fashion, 'ck all use for catching anything coming out of their orifices. About the only ones making a proper fist of DIY masking-up appear largely to be bikers who are familiar with the need to have a proper fit to stop your helmet from fogging up and already have a decently fitted snood / balaclava / detachable mask. I have no idea what the exemplars of how not to do it do for maintenance and cleaning of their facial covering, but some I have seen worn, I would have thrown away weeks ago as highly unsanitary, which kind of hints at supply issues.

I'm much more minded that the best advice to wear the proper type pof mask, properly fitted and with the other relvant PPE is needed when you are tending to someone who is already or suspected of suffering from Covid-19 to protect you, OR you wear a properly fitted mask AND strictly self isolate at all times when you are suffering from or recovering from Covid-19. Otherwise stay at home with your immediate family & keep the hell away from anybody else.

Sorry to be brutal about this folks, but trhe human race is currently the equivalent of the WW2 Sherman Tank Crews and the Covid virus is the equivalent of the Tiger and King Tiger tanks. The Shermans are pretty bog-standard in arm out protection, but there's a hell of a lot of them if you can starve the opposition of targets and keep out of range a lucky shot from the bog-standard will take out the opposition ultra efficient killing machine. It just takes time and ways to limit the casualties until you get to that lucky shot. Self Isolation so you can't pass it on, Social distance / Shielding so that there's fewer juicy targets available and wait until Covid burns itself out.

Survival is reduced to simple mathematics. If you repeat occurences with a likelihood , this is like raising a number to a power where the power is the number of repeats. Do "X" twice, it's the square, do "X" three times - cubed. any number raised to a power. Here "X" is the average number of reinfections that happen for each initial infection - the "R" value that's mentioned on the news.

If a number is greater than 1.000000000......0, if you keep repeating it several million times in a population, the resulting total will reach infinity - we all WILL die.

If the value is less than 1.0000000...0, it will eventually reach a value of effectively zero. Eventually no new cases, no-one else dies.

If it is exactly 1, the disease will cintinue in the population and only some will die.

If you want to wear a mask, I'd suggest that you try to get something very like a "real" Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet. As for myself, I'll be staying at home. The freezers are still well stocked, the garden is beginning to produce nicely both edibles and decoratives and broadband has so far allowed me to remain part of the team keeping the lights on for you all 24/7.

SAGE? No one knows what they have been up to or how effective they have been. We will never be told anything other than they they are fabulous!

I think that WHO have done their best given the financial and legal limits they have. When you look at their announcements, they were on to it very early. There was talk about when they first used the word 'pandemic' but I took their caution in that, on previous occaisions, politicians have said they cried 'wolf'. Modern politicians will always spin it to suit themselves.

There are masks and there are masks.
Within the ICU areas of the hospitals they fit masks for you that are tested to make sure you cannot smell or taste a noxious chemical. This is to make sure you dont manage to pick up the very bacteria laden air in the area. These masks should prevent you from breathing in the bacteria.
For normal situations (even on an aircraft) all you need is a basic mask to stop your coughs and sneezes travelling very far. Similarly, to stop you picking up things too easily. It wont prevent you breathing in the bacteria, but will make it less likely.

Anyone dared to consider the environmental impact of all these masks and medical testing kits?

Probably has created as much damage as we saved by stop flying airplanes.

And the good ones are not all that easy to breathe through. What logic are American and Delta using by making the wearing of masks optional, except for crew.

In mid-March, I flew from Vietnam to Canada, wearing a surgical mask for nearly 24 hours. That was bad enough but subsequently, I've worn an N95 mask for a couple of hours. Much more difficult to breath through it - I can't imagine wearing one for a whole day!

................ and who will provide the masks and control their quality????

Has anyone considered immigration/passport control and E-gates? Will people be 'recognizable' even with masks on?

No one is really considering anything at the moment.

The people who spend their days on Twitter complaining that the NHS don't have enough PPE will be the same ones complaining in years to come that it was all single-use and sent to landfill afterwards.

The general public wearing masks in the supermarket and so on do so as they are scared more than anything else. All the information I have heard regarding masks is that they won't stop you getting anything, but they may stop you passing it on, however, that all depends on the sort you wear.
