The Australians were rather hard about animal imports. There were big problems if dogs had escaped from their containers in holds or the paperwork wasn't spot on. I suspect they were taken off to be 'sorted out'. Considering the country is home to all the most poisonous and venomous animals/insects/sea life in the world, I never understood quite why they were so unscrupulous. It was not that rare to find the odd dog escapee resting beside its container and lying very contentedly on top of luggage in the hold panting very proudly. The hold would be closed again whilst the animal people were called. I was always suspicious what was the poor creature's fate! The 'rules' were applied rigorously.
We once had a loader in Perth appear on the flight deck with a radio active 'not to be stored in same hold as livestock' package under his arm. He said 'the hold has got a dog in it, and the other hold is full Captain, would you mind carrying this on the flight deck?' Took a long time to stop laughing (hysterically)!
