Question re carriage of a wedding dress

A good friend will be travelling to Jamaica with BA (economy) in May for her marriage and will be carrying her wedding dress as hand baggage. It's not a huge meringue of a dress and will be in a garment carrier. She doesn't want to shove it in an overhead locker - is it possible for the dress to be hung up somewhere on board?

With thanks, PP

hey,

best wishes to your friend!
It really depends on which airline she is going to fly with, as all aircraft are different.
I have had this before, and as the aircraft was not full I was able to lay it on an empty seat next to the bride. But if it had been I'm not sure where I would be able to store it other than overhead lockers or underneath seats?
Hope this helps

She should be able to pop it into one of the CW wardrobes. Probably a good idea for her to board early before they fill up, though.

Gosh, you know what, I'd be calling the airline straight away and asking upfront.

We have so many couples coming onto our aircraft carrying big suit carriers of garments that need to be treated like gold leaf, and we simply do not have anywhere "special" to place such a "special" thing! There are coat cupboards in J class that are very strictly for J class only, and even if we were to be dodgey, they are only tall enough to fit coats, not dresses, so the bottoms get scrunched up anyway... It always ends up in a game of "see-how-many-hosties-can-get-into-an-overhead-locker" as two or three poor hosties in skirts play acrobatics in the overhead lockers trying to perfectly place the damn thing on top of peoples bags in already crammed overheads!

I've seen a dress get nastily damaged once - after the bride-to-be and hosties meticulously arranged this most amazingly beautiful dress, some late running douche runs on and shoves his huge buckley backpack on it and tore the dress! The bride to be was fine for some reason, it was me that was hysterically crying!

So ask, dont assume, and start conceiving a back-up plan for if your first idea doesn't work!

Hey

Depends on how big the dress is i suppose.I got married out in Vegas and my wifes dress was like a normal dress, no trailing bit at the back. so what we did was got hold of a mini suitcase that would be allowed on board the aircraft and put in the locker above. If you fold it nicley and take it out as soon as you get there it should be fine. What ever you do dont put in the the cargo hold! Heard so many nightmare stories!

Good Luck

The small suitcase is a good idea and pack with acid free tissue paper. Don't forget that the dress will have to go through X-ray so if it's in a big carrier it may get all bent out of shape anyway and depending on the route you might be denied in cabin carriage anyway if it's full of people away to get married.

Wish you friend all the best won't you?

urok - what's a 'hostie'?

As the question was based on a BA 3 class 777 operating to KIN, I can say, with reasonable confidence that the wardrobe to passenger ratio will allow the crew to stash the odd wedding dress.

Unless you are a high value Gold Executive Club member, BA don't really have a pre-travel service where you can prepare for such a thing. Anyone you speak to anyone on the phone will just tell you check it. From my experience in customer relations, dealing with baggage issues, that is probably the last thing you should do with it - apart from letting the groom wear it.

Bring it on board, you will be fine.

Wot? You dunno?

VS-LHRCSA: I presume your opening line is tongue-in-cheek and you DO know what a 'hostie' is/was?

For those raised totally in the age of political correctness and to further your education:

Hostie = hostess = female cabin crew.

Age had its benefits
