I don't know about long haul food, but when Gate Gourmet had its industrial action many moons ago, A representative came on air and said BA buys its All Day Deli boxs at something around £1.01 per meal

They might well be able to pay that price (then) but that is due to the enormous savings made on scale. The numbers of units per month must be astounding. Then there is the cost of getting it to the a/c and loaded. When LCC carriers charge for food, I generally find the prices bearable. If I don't like the prices - or the choice - then I make sure that I have eaten beforehand. With LH there is not the choice and I am sure that we will see both wonderful deals for food and outrageous prices for food. That is human nature!

It appears they've beat a hasty retreat from buy-on-board on the transatlantic flights out of IAD.

EI-CFC - Are you saying the free meal service is being re-instated or that there will be no grub (paid for or free) at all?

If free meals are being re-instated, what are the chances for the member of staff that came up with the idea?

Rainboe,
Yes, I'm not too keen on drinking water from the tanks although, when I think about it, we used to drink water from our ships tanks at sea.
On some sail trainers we analysed for free chlorine in the potable water tanks and adjusted with tablets.
The problem with the aircraft tanks is that, even as crew, we don't get to confirm the treatment.

Re food, at least we could take on something that we like to eat - and the dabbawalla could bring the skipper's tiffin from Mrs Pilot

After seeing another post on a different forum, Korean Airlines, the average spend per passenger on longhaul food is.

First $80
Business $50
Economy $15

Free meals in economy will remain in place in transatlantic flights from IAD

EI - Got to agree with you there!

Anyway, so they gave up then. I presume they realised they'd put their size 14s right in it. They obviously didn't even attempt the slightest bit of market research on it.

For free they could have got a lacky to put up a post on this very forum asking something like 'I hear UA are stopping free in-flight meals in economy, waddya reckon?' and they would have got a modicum of an idea of the reaction.

Oh well.
