Aircraft Nicknames?

OK I have heard that the BAe 146 is nicknamed the 'Fruit Bat' but what about the other large kites out there? 737 ect?

F27- Dutch Dogwhistle.B737's are Fat and Thin Alberts.

oldanboldun 15th September 2002 11:40

I understand that the 737's were called FLUFF's which stands for Funny Little Ugly Fat F***ers and that the A340's have been referred to by the 747 pilots as "Babe" because it doesn't know whether it is a pig or a dog.

TIMMEEEE 15th September 2002 22:33

The 737's are commonly referred to as maggots because according to some thats what they look like.
Others referred to it as the "ute" because it has hub-caps and is a great work-horse.

The BAe748 was referred to as the 30,000lb dog whistle (because of the high pitched whine of the Turboprops - F27 was similar).

The BAe 146 was always referred to as the slug - that says it all.

The original metroliner was called the terror-tunnel or "the widow-maker".Never flew one so dont ask me why.

F111 is called the pig.
The Caribou is the green gravel truck.
C130 Herc is called commonly the trash-hauler.

The F28 was called affectionately the "pocket-rocket".

The JT8 engines on the 727 were called fuel converters (because they converted fuel into noise, smoke and residual thrust!).
A real plane with real engines!!!

BlueEagle 15th September 2002 22:53

The HS125 was also called the 'pocket rocket'

And the SC7 (Skyvan) - not really a 'big' aircraft, was called 'Melody in Metal' and 'The Whispering Nissen Hut'

The Bristol Britannia was called the 'Whispering Giant' - was very quiet for such a big aircaft.

The A380 will probably be called 'The Dinosaur'!;)
