Getting an Instructor Rating
 
Hi Ppruners,

I have decided to do an instructor rating to further my flying, as its suddenly no longer possible for me to keep moving all over the country looking for little charter jobs.

Ideally looking at Melbourne, possibly Brisbane - I am trying now to find out which school is the best place to do an instructor rating.

I may be barking up the wrong tree but i'm basing my choice on not only the quality of the teaching I hope to recieve, but the prospect of being employed at the same school as soon as I'm qualified, and staying there for a few years.

What schools are good to work at as an instructor, and what's beneficial for a long term career plan that ends up flying a jet?

So far I'm thinking

GFS: they train qantas cadets
Tristar
Royal Vic Aero Club
Royal Qld Aero Club: they seem to have a deal with the Airline Academy
MFS

Do schools employ their own students, and if so, is that a good idea, or should I just get the rating and then look for a job?

Suggest you talk to Glen at MFT, they have a great atmosphere and are well connected in the industry. I'll most likely be doing my instructor rating there later this year once the CPL/MECIR are out of the way, so if you're not looking to start immediately, drop me a PM, I'll be seeking a buddy to do the 30/20 hour split in my own Archer, which could push costs to less than 10 grand each.

Ah the old 30/20. Really you should find a school that can provide a G1 for 50 hours. I'm not sure 30 hours is enough to fully prepare you to start instructing. I've heard guys whinging about having to do 20 hours of CCTS with another trainee to finish the rating. How is this beneficial?

CASA is upping the standard for initial G3's I hear. So perhaps now some schools will start treating the 20 hours with respect and use them wisely.

Strim,

Its been a while since I have been involved in flying training, but what disrespect can flying schools show to mutual training for an instructor rating? It is supposed to be the equivalent to solo practice that is included in other areas of the licence syllabus. A time to practice and consolidate what was learnt with the Grade 1 instructor. The only way there could be a lack of respect for this time is if the individual trainee chose not to use it wisely???

I'm thinking of doing my instructor rating too. How much does a full time G3 expect to earn ? Can someone provide a range ?

$25-50 per flying hour for a Gr3 would be about right these days.Once you get that Gr2 then if you're lucky you might be on a 30-40k salary or earn around 40-60per flying hour.It's all give and take and depends where in the country you are.

I am currently on $53.00 per hour flying (VDO) as a Junior Gr3 casual.

About to go full time and will be on about $34-35k/pa.

Thanks for the figures, Rawrawhammer and Stretch06.

It's a little less than what I expected but it's still money. Add back the hourly fees your student is paying and that becomes a saving in real terms, as compared to the opportunity loss if buying yourself hours.

We all have to make a start somewhere - the bottom rung ...
