Perth - renting C152s/C172s
 

Hey guys

2 questions to all you friendly ozzies

Will be visiting Perth in early December for a week or so....

Need a recommendation on somewhere I can take a plane up for a few hours to sightsee/have some fun. Looking for a relaxed and friendly club that will not screw me!!

As I will have a South African PPL I guess I'll need to convet this to the temporary Australian licence - does this take long?

Shop around on the internet, there are lots of people at Jandakot who can hire you aircaft. Not all of them are clubs, so you don't have to pay membership fees.

Be warned that there can be a very long delay to get overseas licence holders validated by CASA to fly here, as they need to confirm your details with the authority that issed your licence. So you need to get on to this right away, as it could take weeks.

DEFINITELY give the Aviation Inst. of Australia a call or check out the website, and as the boss is a Pom, she knows a thing or two about international licences. Also, it is a small school (meaning little or no long waiting lists) with very well maintained aircraft (C152, C172, PA28R and PA44) with navaids that work.

I don't work there but I trained there and you WILL be well looked after. The CFI is a character!! "The Grim Roper"

thanks for all your replies, it would seem jandakot is the place to be. Can i ask you this? I'll be in Perth for 10 days or so, would it better to stay there and commute out or is there a town (with lively birds and lots of booze) in the area?

keep in mind I'm backpackin!!

Jandakot IS a suburb in Perth. You can get a bus out to the airport on weekdays no problem.

I was going to tell hime about the 4 hour horse an cart ride along the old stock track to get to the airport which has a single dirt runway and a controller under a beach umbrella waving coloured flags at the aircraft flying overhead. Also the great nightlife in a pub 3 hrs drive away where they play both kinds of music (Country and Western).:D

Seriously though Irishwingz. You can take a bus which I think maybe involves one change at a place called Garden City (Booragoon) or Murdoch interchanges. Their schedule is not all that frequent though to Jandakot Airport. Hire cars can be obtained for about 30 or 40 South Pacific Pesos (AU dollars) per day. Wait until you get here rather than book through an agent or over the internet as it will be cheaper. There is not much in the way of good pubs locally but you can stay in the chalets at the airport for a reasonable rate and if you have a hire car (which I strongly recommend if staying at the airport), you can easily get to Fremantle or the ciity and then get rumbled on the way home by the booze buses. :oh: Local pubs in the Canning Vale area are great for Bogan spotting and that's about all. There is a good cafe on the strip next to the control tower which is open for breakfsast but closes relatively early. Also an asian kitchen at the golf driving range a couple of hundred metres from the main entrance.

Jock, thats good info, I may hire the car and spend a few days driving around and doing a spot of flying. High on my agenda are flying and meeting women. Just need to dust off the old Top Gun jacket and Ray bans and Ill surely pull.....WA watch out:}

Irishwingz as a compatriot of yours, I might suggest you get on the auld sunbed and catch a few rays there cos you'll be landing right in the middle of the Perth Summer (give or take a week or several) and knowing full well that Ireland's 40 shades of green didn't come about by soaring temperatures!! Suffice to say the babes will be aplenty especially at the nightclubs and at the beaches.
Did you catch any of the coverage of the Worldflight 2003 by Paul Ryan and Alan McMahon during or after they touched down at Shannon? Met up with them in Broome for a few hours. Brave, brave men but thrilled for them that they completed it, and all in a wee single, too.
I may be home in Ireland at Xmas (it'll be weird not wearing shorts and going for a swim) and intend hiring a plane from Eglinton (I'm Fear na gContae Doire) and doing a wee jaunt around the north coast and maybe down to Connemara

Try Air Australia , boss is a cool American dude by the name of Chuck. Don't bother converting your license. Just fly dual for day trip. The AFI will do all RT and you just swing around. Did few hrs and all the AFIs were very keen to have a few hrs in their belts. Symbiotic relationship, I should say.

don't bring your missus. The American in question will probably triy to flog you a dodgy "mile high club" flight. Do look around and DO talk to all the others. Pheonix are another co. you might think about.

I recently did a quick Mooney endorsement with Jandakot Flight Center when I was over in Perth and found it a pleasant experience.
