This is for all the kiwi pilots

, has anybody been to this flying school, can somebody tell me the quality of the training , aircrafts, and the instructers, and is it worth of money? I have been to TG somany times, controlled airspace , any commenets of this school really appriciated since I am looking forward to do some trianing there .

TG is a great place to fly and live, and the school is OK from what I saw...

Links to Flying club in Vanuatu. Three ex/current Instructors are up there. One on a twotter the other two instructing and ATO's. Used to have links to Sunair, a piston twin small airline. Not too sure if that still exists though. Island Air gets pilots from Bayflight, they fly a 172, 206 over to the great Motiti Island.

Was over there last week and saw a heap of students. Good thing is that you have an abundance of instructors. Suppose that is the same as anywhere. They have one 'A' cat (owner), 4 or 5 'B' cats and a handful of 'C' cats.

They have 6ish Cessna 152, 1x 172, Piper Seneca and a cherokee. Not too sure if the cherokee is still working.
They have accomodation on the airfield for students if you dont have some.

If you are interested go and have a chat to some of the students/ instructors. See what they have to say.

Forced landings??
 

I had heard that one TG training outfit had about 4 engines stop mid flight (hence forced landings on the field) in about a six week period. Sorry, just hearsay, but thought provoking. Have a GOOD look.

from what i hear, the bop flight centre is pretty cool. and since mr H has flown in the airline industry and hass set the same standards within his organisation then you would be learning to a higher standard.

you still have to get a job at the other end but they have a few more oppportunities than most.

when looking for a flight school look for one that has a good standard, and also what else could it offer after you finish your cpl.

mr H has fingers in lots of aviation places that could be potential work places after you finish.

otherwise come and work for me, a little flying waka company that is still setting up.

so whats the last verdict is it good or bad....

Flew with mr H back in 95 at New Plymouth. He knows how to fly anything with wings & a real character(was going to show me beach landings but tide was in:\ ) Have not seen new op of his though.

I have trained and worked at BOPFC and I think it's an excellent place to train. TG itself is a great place to live and work and the lifestyle is relaxed and laid-back. The training is no nonsense, no bull****, roughly along the lines of airline requirements but with a touch of 'lets enjoy the GA environment while we're here' sort of approach.
Definitely a place to look at. Also, as pointed out above, Mr. H has a lot of useful contacts.

I'll stick to living over the hill, where the traffic is less (road that is) and the sections bigger than a shoe box - still only 30mins to the beach!

And the chickies that fly there.. Oooohh yes please

Anybody wishing to train to a high standard should look at Bay of plenty flight centre, which is now Bay Flight International.

H%*ks is a good bloke and calls a spade a spade, all instructors there are willing to give 110%.
They now also have ties offshore but have unfourtunately lost all links to Sunair.

Have to disagree no Name, links to Sunair not completely lost at all.
For one thing the links to Sunair in the good(bad) old days were tenuous at best,however the only way that those links could be considered completely lost is if you lost the ability to walk the 100 metres from BFI to Sunair. Working alongside(geographically speaking)a twin IFR operator has got to be better than not working alongside one.If at the end of your training you want to push for that job,then walk over and talk to the big cheese in person.
Anyway, links to other operators on the TG field are one plus to Training at BFI,but remember Motitian Airlines are at least 200 hrs away & Sunair much,much further than that.
Best advice is to go to BFI and talk to them,they seem very approachable to me. Might pay also to ask the hard questions about the impending loss of full funding,and beware the usual - "there is going to be a huge shortfall of pilots worldwide in the next 10 years" line that all big(ish) flying schools seem to be trumpeting these days-worldwide -yes,NZ - NO!

I agree with your comments about Sunair but prehaps you should do a little more research. The ops man at sunair is ex BFI and for reasons only locals know these two companies are not in each others good books.

Yes you can take a walk over to sunair but their min hour req is not that easy to get (100 PIC MULTI), unless you are willing to buy it. Topped up with the fact the guy doing the interviews for sunair (ops man) dosen't like BFI boys and girls, unless he trained them makes it a very hard option.

But once again I will agree with you, go see the BFI lads make your own decission.

From what I have been told, everything in the whole Bay of Plenty is steeped in history and grudges go deep and are long held (NB I dunno much about that side of the hill, but it is certainly the case at the smelly end of the highway)

Bay Int'l has good airline status.
 

Hooks is a great character, you will really enjoy being under his influence, just as much as he enjoys being under the influence (did I say that?). He is very well respected in the airline and flight testing industry for his ability to check and train so professionally whilst retaining such a 'happy go lucky' attitude and good sense of humour. He breeds a calm and collective string of pilots, and this training will show up positively in an airline interview.
