How petty do we get?

General Aviation never changes and I am glad to be out of it. Recently had a friend accused of operating charter flights in a private category aircraft without an AOC, when all they did was take his friend up on a cost share flight. Without asking the pilot involved what was going on another operator on the airfield phoned CASA and reported them. CASA investigated and found nothing untoward going on. Operators should be careful of possibly starting small wars on their door steps, especially when recently two of there aircraft have had engine failures as the whole house of cards can fall down very quickly. I've seen this many times before and it never ends up pretty with accusations and counter claims, even court proceddings. This kind of thing is what gives GA bad name and can keep those who may be interested away. We are going through a turbulent era at the moment and should be working together not starting petty arguments against those we may not get along with.:ugh:

Good Topic...

Unfortunatley you have summed up GA in the Top End pretty well.

Generally it is a pathetic squabble between operators. I know there have been some solid threads on MAF however these guys are one of the main offenders in Arnhemland. Years ago it was NTAS/ Air Frontier dobbing each other in for a bad smelling fart.

Even remember when we had a Halls Creek base and the Oasis boys were not allowed to inter company socialise.

Of late it has not been to bad, however even large reputable companies have been caught doing it.

I am not saying I have not been guilty of this as I know I have, even recently, then I looked back at my actions and reversed it.

What the problem is, is that people don't realise that if we all worked together we would all make more money???

Saying that the pettiness involved in the industry makes my sons grade 2 look sophisticated.

This is a service industry, give the client the service, be reliable, it doesn't matter if your a little more expensive, you get the work... I know we do.

To a certain individual:-
As for pathetic actions like photocopying the ole bushranger and faxing it to cleints??? What you think they don't get the paper... Wake up sonny its the NT. Its alright though we both got a laugh out of that.

Just my $1.50's worth...... :ok: :ok: :ok:

p.s. HAPPY EASTER to everyone, have a great weekend.;)

the wizard of auz 17th Apr 2003 17:42

Hey HA, your in GA, where did you get a $1.50 from?.
GA is very much like that. I have had the unpleasant experiance of having the same done to me by some very unscrupuless operators.
there are also companies very close to me that wont let their pilots interact with other operators and organisations on the field.
(some do though ;) )
its all part of a nasty little industry........ shame though, as I have worked in with other companies and we did alright........ until they decided that they could be sneaky and make a better dollar...... it back fired, and usually does.

:D

Lefthanded_Rock_Thrower 17th Apr 2003 18:47

when is it then, that in your opinion is it OK to pass on info to CASA ?.

Not_Another_Pot 17th Apr 2003 18:57

Get the facts first, dont assume because to assume makes and ASS out of U and ME

NAP:(

snarek 17th Apr 2003 19:03

And don't do it for capital gain.

CASA is confused enough without it thinking it has the right to regulate the size of your bank account.

Only ever do it where SAFETY of passenger and crew are being ENDANGERED, and then read NAPs post six times and sleep on it.

cold hard facts count. better than just being in competition (even when you aint). good thing being suspicious, gives one time to gather evidence. but without evidence your just another neurotic. espesially if you have a history of this sort of behaviour.

Mr. Hat 17th Apr 2003 21:33

No no no no no no no no no....no.. When do people that dob other people in because they have just lost some buisness realise that they can suffer also?

I put this thought out to you. Captain Charlie Brown has been in GA for a few years and been shafted up the arse many a time (as all are in GA). Gets a call from CASA and they give him the third degree threatening this and that.

Captain Charlie Brown goes home shaken and upset. Wakes up and realizes that he has had it with GA.

What do you reckon are the chances that Charlie might have been pushed too hard and might crack and go buy a baseball bat (not for batting practice).

People think that everyone is just going to take it up the arse because they are trying to make it in the industry. Be careful, there are people out there that might give up. At that point you are dealing with a member of the public and you might find yourself on the end of a good old arse whipping!

That goes for people who have been lulled into a false sense of security by the constant arse kissing they've received over the years. The next time you are thinking of dobing some poor bastard in thats done nothing, or the next time you decide to speak to one of your employees like they were a piece of dirt think of the possible consequences.

Work hard, be fair and treat all with respect.

Petty dobbing without substantiated facts is nothing more than a huge waste of time and expense for everyone involved.

Im sure the folks at CASA would love to do their job with all the efficiency expected of them... but how is that possible when petty politics and small minded attitudes constantly tie their resources....

One knows that there are real cases out there which are potential time bombs... get the facts and get it straight... have a think on what your motives are, then go have a chat if there remains a percivable and provable problem.

There is a huge difference in being a "dobber" and reporting a potentially serious problem.

High Altitude 18th Apr 2003 08:28

The problem with the petty cr*p is that CASA has no choice but to in vestogate.

One has to wonder though as when a genuine report is made and you see nothing done??? I once submitted a report after talking to an operator and not being satisfied with the response.

A VFR Lance flew overhead Darwin at 300' in the wet. The weather was cr*p we were listening to the scanner and this Lance came into Darwin. Cleared in special VFR, tower asked if he was visual with the runway at which time it was uh er no, very interesting as the tower responded you are overhead the field at 300'..... Nothing ever came from that report????

Yet I had an ex employee who was rather vindictive, tie up valuable time with un signed and un addressed CAIR's which CASA treated serioulsy. It took a week to show CASA that it was just a vindictive flair at the company and we were given the big green light.

Problem was it was a hell of alot of wasted time.

There is a line on when and what to do, airmanship and ettiqute should come into play.

Once remember seeing an Otter using a downwind runway (approx 10-15kts) I was rather surprised, having no idea about Otters I rang the CP and asked him the question. Needless to say I was happy and the problem was resolved.

Wish my pax would hurry up and turn up so I can get outa here...

the wizard of auz 18th Apr 2003 11:04

And earn another $1.50!!!. strewth mate you wil have a porsche and a big ass soon if ya not carefull. ;)

Boomerang 18th Apr 2003 18:38

HA,

I am just wondering how you would react to another operator asking you if the Baron that just landed with an x knot tailwind was within the aircrafts' performance envelope?

But good on you for asking the CP anyway. The weeners we are discussing would just have put in a CAIR report I guess :)

I have been witness to such petty acts also, it's not pretty when they do such things in the hope they will obtain some comercial advantage. Either through trying to use CASA, or worse, by approaching the other companies clients.

No And Then 19th Apr 2003 15:13

Sometimes you really dribble **** HA.

Wasn't it you who phoned casa the other week after you didn't get a certain contract to point out the exact company who did get it .

It was so nice of you to point out to casa that they would bust duty times if they did the jobs, but come to think of it, hasn't NAC been doing this exact same contract for quite some time.

Throtlemonkey 21st Apr 2003 11:14

Similar thing happened to me recently I had a private ops ferry flight to do and I put my uniform on with the intention of looking for work doing the meet and greet on the way. On my return I got a please explain from the local CASA foi because some body saw me pulling the aircraft out of the hangar in uniform and assumed I was doing charter work without an AOC. I know who it was and their advanced age is the only thing saving them from a kick in the balls. they could have rung me directly to find out what was going on with out wasteing casa's time or they could have minded their own business.

High Altitude 21st Apr 2003 13:34

If you read my post you will see I have admitted to making enquiries to CASA when I believe that something isn't right. Point is situation clarified and I'm as happy as a pig in sh*t...

Bit like years ago when a certain operator used to fly aircraft around the country not logging time.

Problem is with this industry is that if everyone was on level ground then the whole industry for everyone would improve.

There is a difference to being petty and a difference to being fair. If one is using illegal means to benefit then frankly its wrong and whats wrong with picking up the phone.

Each situ desrves a different response......

Oh and don't worry a certain operator picked up the phone to a few of my clients and let them know about the 310 gear up, yep thats nice........:ok:
