Dog Escapes From Landing Virgin Blue B737.

I have just been told by an "insider" at VB, that recently a Dog being carried on a flight as freight, managed to get out of its container, destroy much of the cargo hold lining, and on landing actually somehow open the cargo hold door and escape from the still moving B737.

Can anyone confirm details of this incident?

I know similar things have happened before with Dogs and internal damage, but to actually open the door?

This is NOT a windup, to the best of my knowledge it actually happened.

Must have been a very clever dog.

Most aircraft don't even have handles on the inside of hold doors. (having locked people in holds before - sometimes even by accident)

More likely the first part is true (not uncommon as you say) and the dog made it's escape when the door was opened at the bay.

airsupport 21st Feb 2003 05:08

I agree.

However I was assured that it did happen, and that the Dog opened the door and exited the still moving Aircraft, well before the Gate.

It obviously has been kept VERY quiet, well up to now anyway.

What you suggest is total rubbish, absurd and ignorant. No dog or anyone / anything opened the door from the inside ! there is no handle for a start, on the inside. Maybe and just maybe, the dog jumped out after the aircraft stopped and the door was opened from the outside.

Absurd and ignorant??

Sorry to disappoint you, but the 737 does indeed have an internal door handle in the hold, and is opened by downward force, and not all that much force, too.

There was a thread on this site backed up by media reports if I remember correctly. Do a search - it was within the last two months.

airsupport 21st Feb 2003 06:37

Well maybe I am ignorant? :(

However, the person that told me, ASSURES me it IS true.

Apparently the dog container is supposed to be loaded a certain way, and it wasn't in this case.

I only heard about it today, and I did check back a little way but couldn't see another thread, I also thought it was quite recent, maybe not so recent.

Thank you, I have now read all that.

There seems to be just a little doubt on that thread  that the story is true, however I have the utmost confidence in the person that told me, that it did in fact happen. ;)

airsupport 22nd Feb 2003 02:25

I have been a member of this site now for some 8-9 months, and during this time I have always behaved perfectly, however I have a terrible secret that I can no longer stand.

I am actually a very mixed up male.........

Townsville Refueller 22nd Feb 2003 02:35

Well if it is confession time, I too have a shocking secret.

I have been a member here even longer than that, always done the right thing.

However I must admit, I am also a really mixed up male.

The dog jumped out of the hold when the door was opened by ground staff. It chewed though it's cage and the webbing inside the hold.

This has happened at every airline in the world that accepts animals. It happens at QF and used to at AN.

Don't believe every thing you hear airsupport. The best source is the airport airside forums where they mention all reported incidents relating to taxiways and runways.

Your hair would stand on end.

airsupport 22nd Feb 2003 04:56

HGW,

Thank you for your advice, I am sure you mean well.

You really expect me to believe what someone has put on a Forum, RATHER than an eye witness account from someone that was there?

THIS is a Forum, tell me you do NOT believe EVERYTHING here. :(

The dog opened the door well before the Aircraft was anywhere near the gate (terminal whatever), trust me. :D

Obviously they have tried to cover it up  however the people that were there saw it, no matter what you and the Forums say........

Best regards,

airsupport.

Capn Laptop 22nd Feb 2003 05:12

Airsupport,

There is NO way the dog opened the hold door on a 737.

Not unless it was Superdog on his way to Movie World to shoot the next movie.

For starters the doors opens inwards and the dog would have to have the smarts to somehow open the door AND get out of the way..

hmmmm

Another Urban myth

airsupport 22nd Feb 2003 05:44

I just cannot believe that so many people, especially on an Industry Forum, cannot understand.

The dog's cage was NOT loaded properly.

During the flight, the dog managed to eat his way out of the cage, and eat a lot of the cargo lining etc.

He also managed to release the internal door handle by pushing on it, this is the handle that most of you do not even know about.

Now OBVIOUSLY the door would NOT open anyway while the Aircraft was pressurised  and I guess the dog moved away from the door.

However after landing, AND LONG BEFORE THE GATE, with the door handle already released, the door opened enough for the dog to jump out, which he DID, and was then seen by many people running alongside the Aircraft..........

Which part don't you understand?

Moby58 22nd Feb 2003 10:12

airsupport,

You state in your first post if anyone can confirm what you had been told, and that it was not a windup.

You then go and attack EVERY person that says it couldn't happen, and that there are eye witnesses to the dog running beside the moving plane.

If there are eye witnesses, why ask for someone to confirm, when you wont believe them?

Either you accept confirmation that it couldnt happen, or you ARE trying to wind up.

Which is it??

airsupport 22nd Feb 2003 10:57

I already KNOW that it happened.

I was just trying to get more details, as the person that told me said it was more than their job was worth to tell me all the details, and there has obviously been a massive cover up.

The people that have said it CANNOT happen, obviously were not there and don't even know the system, unless they are part of the cover up.

It IS possible, and it DID happen. :D

Obviously it looks as though anyone that may know will not admit it for fear of losing their job, and it is only attracting comments from people that don't know, so PLEASE forget it.
