Cessna with Leyland engine
 

An ex-Ozzy mate was relating to me earlier a humorous (but somewhat sketchy) anecdote about a couple of guys in Queensland in the '80s who stuck a Leyland engine into (he thinks) a Cessna 172/182.

It turned out CASA weren't too impressed (surprise, surprise).

Anyhow, we couldn't find any details on the net about it, and we were wondering if any of you chaps down in Auzzie land recall such an incident and if so, any details about it?

Just a question...........why would you even bother????

Dunnow about a Cessna with a Leyland but about 30 years ago the were some funny stories about a bloke with a Tiger with a Holden engine (a 6cyl with 135hp) and the radiator tied to the struts. Apparently DCA bent a plane trying to catch him.

A guy in napier nz a few years ago thru a rover v8 into a auster, some reason CAA wearn't to impressed!

Good book somewhere about it? Can remember him saying you couldn't ground idle for to long as it would over heat!

I have heard the same story about the holden motor in the tiger apparently it was a 202 red motor from a kingswood, will have to try and find some proof though.

Not bad ... the ratty old things I fly have the some engines made by Rolls-Royce grafted onto the wings. :D

The ford 8/10 side valve was used in a Chiltern in the UK post war with some success.

I dont recall a Leyland engine working successfully in a CAR !

Don't know about the Cessna with a Leyland motor, but there are currently two aircraft on the Australian register which have Leyland donks. VH-FGB is an Amateur replica ME109 & it has a Leyland V8 donk. VH-QQQ is an RV6, it has a Leyland P76 donk.
Used to own a Leyland P76 once, found it to be a much better vehicle than we were led to believe. And the boot capacity was amazing!!

Somebody on chat a while back was talkin about his mate with a Leyland V8 inna RV-6.
Well of course it aint a LEYLAND its a bloody aloominum BUICK wot the poms pinched to shoehorn into various ROVER ****boxes.
You could use any of the yankee aloominum blocks turbo charged and they would run forever.
They had a 690 running as I recall with a Garret one side and a V8 on the tother.
Went like ***** offa chrome shovel but I think the lawyers killed it.
If someone invented a L**oming today and wanted to put it in a light aircraft they would get arrested.

There is anecdotal evidence that a Rover V8 was installed in a Piper agricultural aircraft in rural Australia, however CASA caught up with the owner and the aircraft before it ever got airborne.

That was probably, Torres, due to the fact they couldn't get it started.

Heard that aircraft that had Vickers manufactured parts were affectionately known as "ALTER BOYS".

The Kendell CRJ's had flap actuators that were Manufactured by Vickers, so I was told by a LAME.

Dear 150Driver, I think Torres is closest to the incident your mates have described. My own recollection is also scratcy, however I do recall a courtcase in about 1986 in Central Qld (Rockhampton or thereabouts) when the then CAA tried to prosecute the owners of a light aircraft that had an automotive engine fitted. From memory, evidence was adduced that the aircraft had actually flown, ( seen by a sister in law or something of one of the good ol boys) and then crashed landed. Defence was that the engine fit was experimental and the aircraft had only ever been taxied. (Down a bitchumen road, which involved other authorities) Memory tells me that the not guilty result was helped by CAA Engineering Inspector who reckoned the thing was a Death Trap that was not capable of flight. It did happen! Hope this helps.

Seems my mate read about it in one of the crash mags - he seems to recall townsfolk somewhere reported it because it kept
landing in town to fill up!

Anyway, it looks like it's been lost in the annals of time, so probably not worth pursuing.

There was another incident I've been told about relating to a guy having a bet that he could fly under a certain bridge even though his wingspan was greater than the bridge span - said individual rolled on edge to pass under - apparently denied all knowledge when the CAA turned up - "not me mate - my a/c wouldn't fit!" - anybody remember the details?
