However, in what world is Australian aviation hiring cadet pilots (I'm assuming right out of flight school?) over GA pilots who likely have over 1000 hours flying up in the Top End? I must be living under a rock.

J*, Rex, Qantas Group etc all run cadet programs to feed entry level FO positions. NJS, Skippers and a few others also were running similar programs in the past, I'm not sure whether that is still the case though.

These programs are being run parallel to GA employment streams, they are certainly not priotising GA pilots with 1000+ hrs. If anything the opposite, what they can feed from their own cadet source would be given priority as they have full control over the training product, then surplus positions are filled from GA.

Add to this, airlines are filling their entry level positions with cadets. That's far fewer positions open to GA pathway than existed in the years prior to cadets.

I have to disagree with you on that one.

Every airline is currently hoovering up GA pilots as quick as they can. Entry minimums are lowering all the time. They can’t get people in fast enough to satisfy projected growth. Any charter pilot with a couple of years experience would be eligible to apply for most airlines now.

Cadetships are great and a good source of pilots, but I don’t think they make the GA source redundant any time soon.

Yup. Truth is some guy with 1, 2 or even 3000 hours tooling around in the weeds has little to offer as an ab initio FO flying city pairs in mostly controlled airspace. Your 250 hour cadet will do as well.

That GA experience probably only makes a difference when it’s time to move to the LHS.

Not putting down GA experience, it’s just that with ever more “sophisticated” systems there is an ever decreasing need for aviators. Magenta line following button pushers do just as well if not better. Thats how engineers are designing new aircraft.

?????? Are there positions for grossly overweight pilots??

I have noticed recently some CPs have built new relationships with some of the quality training places that still exist (no they are not all bad!), and pulling in crew that way. I see one CP has lured half a dozen new recruits from one provider over the last year or two.

It would be worthwhile for some owners and CPs to build relationships with CPs from flight schools. Works out for both parties. You get an honest opinion from someone who has watched the student grow from nothing to a license. I reckon there is still half dozen decent outfits across the land that offer good training. Don’t let those students slip away.
