Sydney flyby - 21 February

Impressive formation flight over Sydney city today - looked like F-18s - does anyone have details, who, what and why?

Lead Balloon 21st Feb 2023 01:59

I'm guessing it will have something to do with the end of the 'Classic Hornet' era in the RAAF.

(It's slightly depressing to have lived through the end of the eras of a number of RAAF fighter types...)

Korean Air Force I believe

Capn Bloggs 21st Feb 2023 03:14

Last Hornet flight was last November.

When the F-18 was the new rooster in the hen house I stood on the roof of the DCA workshop in Canberra and watched a display of military hardware that Defense Minister Beazley wanted to show off. The Mirage started behind the F-18 and within 2 1/2 turns the F-18 was on the Mirage tail, all within the airport perimeter. I wonder if the F-35 could do the same?

Against the Mirage, probably! :}

Against the F18, I suspect not. From all the videos of displays I've seen of the F35, it's not that remarkable in the manoeuvrability area for this day and age, and those tip streamers would be a dead giveaway. It's forte is in the systems it has on board and of course, stealth.

Lookleft 21st Feb 2023 06:32

So what you are saying Bloggsy is that the F-35 is not so much the new rooster in the hen house but more of an old cockerel strong in the ways of the Jedi.

aroa 21st Feb 2023 06:50

The Mirage could go afterburner and just leave the F35 aircraft behind. But not it’s sensory perceptions
Correct me if I’m wrong

So what were they commemorating for sure?

You'll have to ask the Koreans!

Paywall article, but the first few lines will do the trick:

.

There were 9 jets flying around Dee Why - but only 8 in any sort of formation. I don't know if the 9th was filming or what.

A taste of Top Gun came to Sydney on Tuesday as jets from the Republic of Korea Air Force soared overhead, giving the city a glimpse at one of the world’s most highly regarded military aviation display teams.

The eight aircraft were flown by the Black Eagles Aerobatic Team and were en route to Avalon in Victoria where they will perform at the 2023 Australian International Airshow, which starts later this month.
...
The eight black, white and yellow aircraft are modified versions of the Korea Aircraft Industries T-30 supersonic light trainer and attack aircraft already in service with the ROKAF.
...
It is the first time either the team or the supersonic Korea Aerospace Industries KAI T-50B Golden Eagle jet aircraft have been displayed in Australia.
From the article quoted

Certainly looked that way as the 9th was in several positions relative to the main formation (even ahead at one point).

A wayward bograt!! Get back into position, 9.

Bound to be a photog.

I know ****all, but I know from general reading that the F35 is not a dogfighting aircraft, it sits over the horizon like a sneaky little ****a and picks off the enemy whether it be air to air or air to ground. We'll be finding out in a year or two just how good it is at it's job.

Thanks for the insight. I witnessed the orbits from Taronga Zoo just a couple of minutes after what would have been awesome pics with the Sydney cityscape behind instead of what could as well be the Black Eagles anywhere there was a blue sky! Never mind; still a nice surprise.

Edited to add the pic now it's off the camera memory card

Good to know this country has at least 9 serviceable aircraft and qualified pilots able to fly them and maintain separation in close formation. Gives me confidence that when China invades, we may last 2 days instead of 1.

Wrong.
The F-35 has a higher thrust-to-weight ratio than the mirage and so better acceleration and rate of climb up to Mach 1. However, the Mirage has lower supersonic drag and so can continue to accelerate to over Mach 2 whilst the F-35 sacrifices max speed for much greater maneuverability.

Given Avalon doesn't start until next week and these guys have only just arrived in Sydney, I reckon we might still be in trouble Squawk!
