AvMed 'as or with co-pilot' restriction
 

Hi all

Just wondering how CASA AvMed views 'minor' visual field defects for multi crew ops

I've got a friend who is looking to get back into the game after having been out for a few years. Unfortunately they were recently diagnosed with glaucoma, which is now being managed successfully. They have field defects in each eye which they say are very small but stable, but they don't think it quite meets CASA's requirements for a 'Favourable' Glaucoma outcome.

They have MCC experience they are wondering if it's worth going down the path of trying to get a class 1 with an 'as or with co-pilot' restriction which would allow multi crew ops at least? I'm wondering if anyone has gone down a similar path in the past so that I can pass on some guidance.

Give it a try. There are a couple of airline pilots in Australia operating with monocular vision. One would think that their field of vision would be worse than your “friends”.

There's no real aiming for 'with or as copilot'. You do the medical for the class you want, AvMed decides on any restrictions that may be required. As for gaining work with such a restriction in place without significant experience might be difficult. Pretty sure the restriction requires the other pilot to have no restrictions so as an FO it adds additional issues for operators to make sure you are not paired with a Captain with similar restrictions, there's a few out there.

I'd be trying to get a medical better than 'with or as copilot' or no restrictions first.
