At the age of 18, Mr Jackson became a fighter pilot serving his homeland of England in World War II.
Gee, you’re hard to please, what does one have to do to be a hero in your opinion?

Hero

a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
"a war hero"

Duck Pilot 7th Jul 2022 14:40

Anyone who is or has been in the armed services and seen combat is a hero in my opinion, regardless of nationality.

With the total exclusion of those who have committed war crimes, whom deserve to be punished appropriately considering the circumstances of their actions.

I wonder if he told or wrote more about his adventures. What type of aircraft was he flying how did he get shot down, combat or flak. Many young folk joined up for the ‘ grand adventure’ so had tales to tell, many will remain forever young. RIP those that gave all.
The word ‘hero’ is bandied about a lot these days, like the rag head lines “ Hero fireman saves cat up tree” !
Equate that with some of the extraordinary things people did in wartime..no contest.

Or "hero footballers"

Active WW2 fighter pilot, flew a number of missions, shot down and captured, POW in a Nazi camp, escaped and was recaptured, didn't even know the day of his own birthday while captured. I suppose it not much harder than staying in your house a few months during a pandemic is it? because that's what everybody thinks is an arduous task these days. Dammit I couldn't go on holiday for a couple of months, bugger the old folks who fought wars, it was was hard stuff sitting at home with everything I needed, I almost got bored watching Netflix....

The bloke is a genuine hero, it'd be an honour to buy the bloke a beer. Anyone I've ever met that was or is a member of the armed services, I thank them for their service. If anyone frequents social media they may have seen a meme:

"Your day on the beach, brought to you by their day on the beach"

If you haven't seen it, track it down. Then have a think about the people we daily call hero's, a lot of whom couldn't give a shit so long as their pay is in the bank account every second Thursday.

Hero for sure, need to remember what the Nazi often did to recaptured escaped prisoners, a bullet to the back of the head. Anybody that rolls that dice is a hero to me. I don't know that our military of today could with stand the privations of those who fought WWII, local gentleman flew the Western Desert in Hurricanes where they flew wearing just shorts, canopy open because of heat, living in tents, suffered so bad from dysentery that pilots landed with the cockpit covered in feaces, shot down over Sarajevo in a Spitfire, into a POW camp that was over run by the Russians and a guest of them for nine months before repatriation, wife said he used to foul the bed every night upon return, died not long after the war. Heros one and all.
