CASA ATPL Conversion Exam
Has anyone sat this exam recently and can give any sort of opinion on it. I am majorly struggling to wrap my head around how in the world to make sense of how to translate law type questions into an answer???? I am using a some friends' of mine old exam references (pre Dec 2021) i would imagine there are differences but surely not major?

AOSA. There will be numerous changes to this exam as many provisions of CAR and most CAOs will be repealed, but CAO 48.1 Instrument 2019 will remain in force. Specific changes include: • refuelling requirements • engine starting and operations near buildings/public areas • classification of operations • carriage of animals and firearms • weather radar requirements and limitations • aircraft Instrument requirements TAWS, CVR, FDR , Altitude Alerting System (note: transitional legislation may apply) • oxygen requirements. • loading and performance: Vspeeds, climb gradients, obstacle clearance • Subpart 121.Z – Certain single-engine aeroplanes • Approach bans • Alternate Aerodrome requirements • Understanding that Part 121 may add to or turn off some Part 91 requirements – either completely or partially. • Splitting general emergency training into yearly and 3 yearly requirements • ELT`s (note: transitional legislation may apply) • Minimum Equipment List (MEL) I'd recommend getting newer, updated references. I'm pretty sure it's just the ATPL airlaw exam re-badged. If you are using an old study course DON'T. Get an updated course with the new references.

Did you sit the exam already? I bought all the study packages just before COVID and in October I'm finally going to sit the conversion exam, but spent a lot of time figuring out the new structure of all the rules and regulations. Once you get to know where you can find all the information, I suppose (or hope) the exam isn't too difficult?

Air Law at all levels - my suggestion is to get the rule books and read them a few times. It is a case of getting your head around where the rules are for this and that. I really don't see much point in trying to study using other material.

I recently sat the exam and the best advice I can give you is to do lots of practice exams. You can use all the documents as indicated on the CASA website during the exam, you only need to know where to look for the answers. The majority of answers were in the CAR, CASR, MOS and AIP. I didn’t need any of the DAPs or charts, but there were some questions on operational meteorology, like decoding TAFs and meteorological charts.
The more practice exams you do, the faster you’ll know where to look for the answers. But make sure you use ‘current’ versions (post December 21) or you’re gonna have a hard time finding the right answers. Hope this helps. |
For those that have done the exam, do you have to have the hard copy reference books or will they let you use electronic resources (ipad, computer) to access the references online during the exams. I’m just starting the conversion process…

And be sure to check how many tags you are allowed to make. Yes, they will be counted before you are allowed to start the exam. |
Hello everyone. I am just starting my overseas ATPL conversion process in Australia. CASA verdict is that I need to do the AOSA, IREX, HUF and PIRC exams. I got my learning kit from Advanced Flight Training. Any advice on how to proceed and what to watch for will be very much appreciated.
