Vale: Sir Peter Barter (Papua New Guinea)

A sad day for all wantoks with the passing of Sir Peter Barter at the Cairns hospital.

Owner of the Madang Resort and MV Sepik Explorer. Hotels in PNG and at least two hotel/motels in Cairns.

Over the years Peter has owned a number of fixed wing aircraft and in recent times a Robinson R44 helicopter. Peter was very generous with the helicopter with humanitarian support around the Madang and Wewak area.

Aviation was Peter's second love after operating his tourism business.

I hope that the PNG Government will offer Sir Peter a State funeral. Peter was also a former Governor of Madang.

Perhaps it might be a good time for mass killings of the recent weeks associated with the forthcoming General Elections to stop and reflect.

The old former Connellan Airways Twin Bonanza was good for waking up the township with Take-Off power!

Thanks for the memories Peter; time to rest

:( :( :(

Big loss to PNG as whole and the aviation community in PNG.

I believe Peter first went to PNG as a pilot and flew for Talair.

Absolutely a true gentleman, professional pilot, businesses man and politician.

I have a vague recollection that he was originally a Qantas cadet, but may be wrong.

Peter was a Qantas Cadet and went to PNG in the 1960s to build hours and experience. He first worked briefly as a volunteer pilot for the Franciscans at Aitape before joining Talair mid to late 1960s. As I recall he convinced Dennis to start TALCO Tours as an in bound tour operator in the days when PNG tourism from Europe and USA was big business. Mid 1970s, tourism declined and Peter acquired TALCO Tours and formed Melanesian Tours in Madang.
