new grade 3 instructor

hey, does anyone know why a fresh g3 can't get a job with a school unless you are > grade 2? did an instructor course but the school didn't hire so been calling around and on afap I've only noticed grade 2s and 1 positions. Bit of a pickle i think as some people say the do the rating with a school that can offer a job at the end - so i did just that! worst case I do a low level and do mustering and be "over qualified". thoughts on this situation? cheers and happy flying!

"over qualified" ... even for mustering?

You have a lot to learn !

not sure I follow the link between a grade 3 instructor rating with no instructing experience making you overqualified to do mustering.

airspeed posted an ad for G2 and G3 a few weeks ago.

Nothing in life is ever guaranteed. Just because one holds a G3 FIR, doesn’t mean that they instantly get a job. The school where you did your FIR training may also have something to do with your troubles - some schools will prefer not to hire people whom have trained with certain institutions.

The issue is that G3’s take a lot of time and effort on the part of their supervising G1 to provide the necessary supervision (in whatever form the operator is approved to provide it as per the ops manual).

Being an FIR holder is definitely a feather in the hat for you, however, leg work is still required. You’ll still need to get in the car and go door knocking, put in a lot of hard work and eventually it should pay off, you just need to be persistent with it.

With regards to the LL rating, I would avoid at this stage. Are you wanting to be a mustering pilot? Or are you wanting to be an instructor? If you are wanting to be an instructor, save the money, and make yourself more employable in other ways, such as additional training endorsements etc.

DM me if you want to talk more

Unless you have worked on a Station, I doubt you’d get a job mustering. Does anyone use fixed wing for mustering these days?

If your application was written in the same manner as the above I'm not surprised you're finding it hard.

tossbag,
Totally agree with your sentiment.

Even if you grew up on a station and had been mustering on the ground for years you couldn't be over qualified for mustering.

Grade Threes require supervision and mentoring. Most schools know that a Grade Three will disappear to one of the mobs who won't hire Grade Threes as soon as they get the Grade Two so it's not worth investing all that time and expertise just so the big internationals can benefit.

Sounds like you have been given some unrealistic expectations.

hmmm well, I'm probably naïve but I just think that a mustering employer would look at me and say 'why aren't you instructing?'

Thanks for the tips - definitely instructing. Might just work on tailwheel etc until the break comes. Didn't think it would be this tough TBH!

New Grade Three Instructor

So the glossy brochure or website said 'Come get your CPL with us' 'And then add on an instructors ticket as instructors are in high demand!'. 'That will get you good flying hours'.
So you get that CPL and then the G3 rating and a big bill of someone's money (parents, VET fee help (tax payers)). And to be paid back.
That is when you find out that work for G3 instructors is not in high demand and that you were spun a load of BS, as massive expense to you.

Buddy, I feel for you. Keep knocking on those door and eventually one will open. Keep the hours going even if it is in a low cost fliver. Anything to put in the logbook. Do not give up. Been there, done that.

Word I've got is the Chinese cadets will be back later this year (Australia open, but cadets having problems getting out of China).

Once that happens, I'm guessing with the Airline instructors that "just want to instruct now" running back to the airlines, the out of work G2's and G1's will get snapped up pretty quick, then the cadet schools will be recruiting G3's off the street. That should hopefully open up some spots in the more interesting flying wise domestic schools...

Just my thoughts anyways...

Ozgrade3 21st May 2022 19:48

China is set to impload. The entire manufacturing base of China is going into lockdown as we speak. It's almost impossible to get out of China. Nothing will change until the Party Congress in October or November. My guess is no international students from that part of the world until this time next year......minimum.

There you go! And just like that, punctuation and grammar appears! There is hope.

Hey mate, had a fair few mates with Gr3 find jobs all around Australia, they aren't on AFAPs website or other websites, but trust me they're out there. Just head out to your local schools and apply, they are hiring like mad right now to be honest!

havoste 22nd May 2022 20:52

The most promising career path for young (and old) Aus pilots now is to hit 1500hrs as fast as possible and go to US, and as a result the larger academies are facing a shortage of G1, IFR and multi instructors. Unfortunately like 200hr CPLs there will always be an abundance of fresh G3s.

Accurate! This in for most positions at the moment. There is no need for advertising at the moment with the line of pilots seeking jobs out the door.

sorry if you've tried to msg privately! I can only get 1 message at a time it seems. Thanks for the tips here - I think I'm screwed and got roped with the VET thing

You and may many others, including us taxpayers who are funding it.
Get out there and get as much command time and networking as you can, good luck!
