TV Show: Fighter Pilot: The Real Top Gun - SBS Viceland from 19-May

See three-part series Fighter Pilot: The Real Top Gun Thursdays at 8.30pm from 19 May on SBS VICELAND.
Episodes will be available at SBS On Demand after they air.

What does it take to become a real top gun? Skill, of course, but also nerves of steel – what one instructor in Fighter Pilot calls "the X factor ... that ability to think clearly under pressure".
For the recruits hoping to be selected to fly the UK Royal Air Force's incredible F35 Lightning jets, the pressure is intense, as this three-part documentary series shows. Fighter Pilot: The Real Top Gun follows a trio of fighter pilot recruits as they attempt to become the best of the best, along with a pilot already in the Lightning force and deep in training to fly the F35.
Narrated by actress Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey), the series makes the most of access to the RAF's new 100 million-pound (A$177 million) fighter program, and gives a glimpse of the many challenges faced by those chasing their dreams.

Must be about 40 ? years since the last 4 ? Part series about becoming a RAF chap. Some started of on piston Provosts ( or was that the movie) and others on the Jet Provost. Early days for all thru Jet training. Flying the Blunty looked like fun.

I met a young fella in the UK that did do all,Jet training, Provost, Gnat, Hunter T7 and operationally Buccaneers for the Navy. Lost that front seat having skipped the Buc off the glassy Channel on a misty morning, doing a simulated low level shipping strike, 50 ft at 500 kts. That must be some adrenaline rush!
He had never flown in a propellor driven aircraft !! Having a go in an Auster he was gobsmacked that this “thing” could fly with just a piece of wood flinging around out front and making all that Gipsy Major noise.

It is a good show, funniest bit is where they have to scrap a mission because the trainee pilot can’t log in to the flight computer so can’t start the jet :-)

NOT the funniest, the cure - turning the master switch off then on to reboot the aircraft was funnier!

The F35 must be a Microsoft product and about as reliable.

Also works well with Boeings and Airbuses!

Don't know the providence of the yarn but there was a story of a military exercise where it was either F-16 or F-15 being scrambled to respond to an incoming raid who found themselves unable to start their aircraft, ECM jammers on the incoming raid were the problem. True, or not?
