The vast majority of traffic I passed was due to an IFR level change, so Quadrantal or Hemispherical didn't come into it. Under Quadrantal, crossing traffic at more than 90 degrees was 500ft apart no matter whether IFR or VFR. Under the Hemispherical rule, crossing IFR (or VFR) traffic within a 180 degree arc is at the same level. You can now have two IFRs virtually nose to nose at the same level, guaranteed by the airspace system. Nice one. Lucky they kept someone providing a Traffic Advisory in G. Now they're just paid twice as much.
PS Dick, Traffic alerting was only part of the job. The "lot of people" were employed to do a lot more than that.

GF, methinks you are mixing AFIZ with OCTA. OCTA was FPR to the FSU which everyone on frequency heard. Entry to an AFIZ (Scratching my head, think it was 30nm from the aerodrome) my closest at the time was BU On first contact with the unit inbound would result in being given traffic. This is memory failing 40 years ago
