Two people have died after a microlight plane crashed into a Cape Range National Park canyon south of Exmouth overnight.

The alarm was raised about 4.30pm last night after the plane failed to return to the Exmouth aerodrome.

Police found the wreckage at about 7.30pm.

Exmouth is a popular place for microlights and tourism flights do operate in the area.

A recovery operation will begin this morning.

More to come.

Bugger .. I did a trike flight there only a few months ago. Fair skies.

The pilot was the guy I flew with in October. Will be very interested in what happened of course .. RAAus will be doing the investigation I assume?

It could be HGFA registered also ??

Yeah, it looks like trikes come under HGFA ... now known as SAFA. Would be a shame if we never find out what went wrong. The flight I did was well done - a climb to 4500 over the rough terrain where this accident occurred, with some formation flight, and then a descent on the western side of the cape and some low level over the reef and back down the eastern side, with another climb, then a power-off landing. But it sounds like this flight was a private flight with his wife, so possibly quite a different profile. The canyon is not very far from the departure point.

They can be registered and operated under either system. SAFA (HGFA) or RA-Aus.
