Cert IV TAE and RPL

Hi all,
I did my instructor rating many moons ago and worked through to Grade 1 MEA. I've been a training captain at an airline here in Oz for a number of years. I don't hold a Certificate IV in training and assessment and am looking down this road.
So the question is, are there any RTO's that will RPL some of the components? Particularly interested in those of you who may have gone down this road. I live in Sydney so ideally looking for one here for any face to face components.

I did a Cert IV in T&A about a decade ago. It was painful: I didn't learn much and it took some time to complete. I concluded that the training institution simply exists to take your money.

Because this qualification has an expiry period, I doubt very much whether you'd get recognition of prior learning. If you do get some recognition, I doubt it will make bugger all difference to the time needed to complete the training.

Best to call a range of training providers to see how long their course takes to complete, after that perhaps discuss RPL.

When I did mine, I looked into getting RPL for some units. It was too much effort, to be honest.

Turbantime, check up and confirm what i say here to make sure the advice is current.

The Cert 4 used to be a very basic course but was substantially upgraded a few years ago, and is now significantly more challenging in terms of cost and time required. Ive heard a lot of negative feedback on the online courses and suggest face to face as the better option.

You should confirm that you actually require it. Not all flying schools will require it. If you are wanting to instruct at an RTO, then it depends on the authority. If you contact ASQA the case used to be that they would accept an instructor rating as equivalent regarding delivering flight training. If the RTO is registered under a state authority then the requirements vary.

Hope that helps somewhat, cheers. Glen

Did a full TAE40116 cert IV inTraining and assesment last year, online and F2F.
I also did parts of the old and now defunct TAE40110 a few years ago, plus Ive been working a bit a couple of years ago doing some vocational training, but that had little contribution to getting some RPL, i think i was granted a unit or two.
I also did the old BZB qualification for the cert IV back in 2003, which was a one week course, pretty simple back then.
These days its quite a difficult course, with a few class mates (who had teaching degrees) complaining that this was harder/crappier.
Advice- prepare to start mostly from scratch unless you can proove recent and current industry experience in vocational training, if not, "pass go and do not collect 200 dollars"
Allocate 12 months to doing it online, attempt to have in done in six months if you can. Recommend you find a good balance of online/F2F. I did 95 % online and the rest F2F, that is a little crappy. Better to go to some classes to knock off the group/team work.
Cost is north of a grand.
Im curently doing a business type degree and I think that is a bit easier to get your head around than the new cert IV. We really dont know the meaning of pragmatism in this country any more I think.

Best of luck ol' chap,

I'm afraid we are stuck with 401XX under the current regime. Several points, as I understand things -

(a) the ticket doesn't expire, per se, but periodically the subject grouping requirements change so one has to do a bit of an upgrade to pick up the new subjects. Historically, the syllabus is on a nominal 6 year cycle with the next one due in 2022. I did mine at Chisholm a couple of years ago (a day a week for the best part of the year - no complaints re the work, though) so I await to find out what I need to do in the next year or two to keep in good standing with the system. While I see the course as being useful for those who have no teaching background, the more you have, the less will be new to you. In the latter case, just a chore to be ticked off although there will be new bits so there is some value to be had.

(b) RPL should be available but, as another poster has suggested, probably more trouble than it's worth and there is the risk that you might pick up some new stuff along the way if you just grin and bear it and do the thing in toto. Certainly, if your story is not very recent and comprehensive, it just isn't going to be a starter.

(c) there was a significant change in the workload requirements at 40116 with a minimum (as I recall) of 30 weeks to be done. The story I received was that this was to get around the on line rush jobs ...

Many moons ago I was able to knock it over in three days thanks to RPL of being a CFI and ATO. I don;t think that certificate is worth anything now though.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm looking into it in the event redundancy comes my way. A few instructing jobs that came up recently had a requirement for the Cert IV hence the interest. I too have enrolled in a business degree to diversify outside of aviation and thought I could try and do both concurrently. Very interesting regarding the 6 year cycle on the qualification. Looks like a better option may be to wait and see how aviation recovers and make decisions, in which case it's easier to do the whole thing. I saw some courses that did the F2F component upfront so that might be the way to go. Was hoping someone out there would've had a neat trick to get around doing the entire course!

Why don't you just bite the bullet and do it at a reputable TAFE while you might have a bit of time to spare ? It is not a heavy course, although you can certainly make it a little so by virtue of how much net research you choose to do along the way.

The problem is that it now takes quite a few months - get it done and it's one thing out of the way which then isn't going to stand in your way at some time when you need it right now ... That was my attitude when I did it as I was looking forward to getting back into pilot theory training work.

My attitude is do it at a TAFE to make the role play components that much easier to get done.

turbantime 11th Nov 2020 21:12

Fair point John, except I can't commit to specific days to do it at TAFE or even the F2F components. Flying is sparodic at the moment and would rather stay current. In saying that, I haven't been wasting any time and have in fact increased the study load for this business degree (all online). There's a couple of providers that do the F2F components over a four week block and then you do the rest at your pace online. I might look at going down this path if I find myself out of work either by redundancy or any future virus wave. Cheers.

I recently completed my updated 40116 through HBA learning, and Carmen Yates as the tutor.
She could not have been more helpful.
