ANZAC Day Flybys
Feel free to post up any pictures or let us know what aircraft were do a flyby in your area! Would be great to find out who was out honouring our ANZACs.

We were lucky to be on the fly past route of a Spitfire/Mustang pair Dawn Patrol from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, spot on sunrise as they went over our street.
In contrast a four ship that has flown over Brisbane on ANZAC Day for some fifteen years was denied permission this year by the Queensland Chief Health Officer, which just shows that it is always better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission! Quick story re Anzac Day Fly Pasts. This one at Cairns in 1953. In those days it was always an RAAF Fly Past. I was copilot on a Lincoln with Flt Lt Sid Gooding DFC as captain. Half way between Townsville and Cairns we lost No 1 engine and had to feather the prop. I asked Sid if we were going to abandon the Fly Past over Cairns and return to Townsville?
With hundreds of hours on Lancasters in WW2 with German night fighters and AA guns shooting at him, a loss of one engine was almost ops normal for Sid Gooding. I remember Sid saying "We can't let the Anzac Day marchers down" "We'll still make it on time - give me climb power." And we were right on time as the columns of marching veterans from the three Services gave an "Eyes Right" to the military top brass at the Cairns Cenotaph. The noise of Rolls Royce Merlins at full chat overhead the Cenotaph drowned out the sound of the band but sure got everyone's attention that day.. |

ANZAC DAY IN TARAWA
No fly past - but some historical aviation content.
Here in (currently virus free) Kiribati we held a short service at the ADF Compound commencing at 0430, attended by those resident in Tarawa who had seen active service. The service was held in the Miss Bee Haven bar which overlooks the wreck of the USAAF B24 aircraft of the same name in Tarawa Lagoon. Following the service we moved to the Coastwatcher’s memorial in Betio where wreaths were laid as the sun rose from the Pacific. The first wreath was placed by HE Taneti Maamau, President of Kiribati. Although the formal ceremony had been cancelled some weeks ago, HE Taneti heard late on Friday that a small wreath laying ceremony would be held and made arrangements to attend. “I’ve always paid my respects on ANZAC Day and 2020 will not be an exception,” he told me. I would hazard a guess this was the only ANZAC ceremony world wide where the local Head of State attended. Of course, just as the ceremony commenced, the heavens opened up. Following the wreath laying we returned to the ADF compound for a traditional gunfire breakfast and swapping of stories. Last time I looked it was CASA that has authority over civil aviation in Oz. Without the formal declaration of a state of emergency or war, the states have no authority about what occurs in any airspace and in the later case it would be the DoD.

Noted re 4, 3, 4 Melins. Thought the problem may have been solved and did a restart for the fly by. Also I'm sure I saw an engine yonks ago in the Qld Museum stated as from a Lincoln...and a Griffon. ! ? Had to do a bit over 'google' on that. GAF Lincoln mk 30 Merlin 66s and or 85s or both. I remember in the 50s the Lincolns from Malaysia doing the Adelaide fly over. What lovely noise ! What a great shame there isnt a flying example in Oz. Cant beat 4 Merlins on song, but Ive only seen/heard that close up with 2 Mossies tucked in tight doing a beat up, pitch and break left and right. Magnifico !! . ( UK '63) |

Non-essential travel under Covid-19 regulations. It’s vague on purpose. Sure you can fight it, but you might be up for costs. that has nothing to do with aviation or flying operations.... |
