Removal of missed approach data from RNAV procedures in DAPs.
 

Haven't flown IFR for years and in my time never flew GNSS approaches, but I do use the GNSS approaches now for other purposes and was wondering what the background was for removing the MAPT data. I know the rwy threshold can still be obtained from the DAH but it was much easier to click on the point in Oz Runways the get the required waypoint. Which makes me ask, if you are flying a GNSS approach how know when you have passed the MAPT. Do you go by the distance to run to the MAPT hold or does the RWY MAPT still get downloaded in Jeppesen GPS data updates?
Anyone shed some light on this change?

If you are using a FMC or FMS at the MAP the missed approach leg should automatically sequence at the EOA (End Of Approach).

Some old GA GPSs won’t automatically sequence through the MAP and you gotta manually select it otherwise it will just go into DR mode if I recall correctly, aka King KLN 89 if I recall correctly.

Thanks DP, had a demo from an F100 capt that the waypoint came up on the FMS. Ill just have to manually install from DAH data for my purposes.

don’t want to modify any points. Just saying I can no longer select the MAPT in Oz runways. whereas previously the point. Was named eg ***EM etc it is now just called MAPt RWY **. So just trying to get my head around why this was changed.

Yes thats exaclty what I am referring to. Look at some regional airports and the MAPt is only shown as, for example RW14 on the Port Hedland RNAV-Z procedure.

It’s an Airservices change. That “RW14” is not in their database so Ozrunways don’t have it. 🤦‍♂️

As a (somewhat pedantic) note, MAPt is not always the threshold of the runway.

I can't think of a good example in Australia (since I've yet to fly here commercially, and have only done about 5 RNAV approaches here), but if you check FltPlan dot com, and search Thunder Bay, then navigate to approach plate for RNAV RWY 12, the MAPt (called MAWP in Canadia) is almost 2 miles back from the threshold.

If you're using the GPS for the RNAV waypoints and distance, without also checking the approach plate to see if they match your expectation (please say it is only in VMC you're doing that), that could lead to some pretty low approaches for cases like the airport above. (Why not use the direct to airport, OBS the runway heading trick instead? If you're VFR, and can keep track, you're breaking no rules [that I'm aware of] by doing it, and you get a distance that is within .5 NM of what you want every time)

Also, if you're flying a segment of an approach in VMC, just load the approach in the GPS, and fly it as if it's only track guidance. (Going direct to the point - ie: 10 NM fix - you want to start from. Do not do that in IFR!)

That last bolded bit isn't necessarily for you, but for any impressionable youth that might come across this.
