An electric Roller at 300+ MPH???

RR are developing a 300 MPH electric plane:

https://www.rolls-royce.com/media/press-releases/2019/19-12-2019-rr-unveils-all-electric-plane-targeting-the-record-books.aspx

If one subscribes to Albert Einstein's first law of thermodynamics, the Law of Conservation of Energy, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, energy can only be transformed from one form to another. Thus to be anywhere near carbon neutral this plane and your Toyota Prius or Tesla Model 3 must always be charged from a zero emission power sources, which is near impossible.

I suspect the cost of this aircraft, if it ever goes into mass production, would even make a major airline CEO's eyes weep!

Greta Thunberg will buy one.

There are a lot of small steps to learn before you can run.

KRviator 21st Dec 2019 23:12

It ain't all about power. Dave Anders got his RV-4 well north of 240MPH primarily through consistent efforts at drag reduction with only a modest power increase on the IO-360. I'd like to see the effort Rolls has put into aerodynamic cleanliness for this attempt.

Lemme see now ….Re "or fly 200 miles (London to Paris) on a single charge." …...

200 miles @ 300 mph = ETI 40 mins....on a single charge = ENDCE of 40 mins..??

Less 'Reserve' 30 mins = 'Legal' Endce of 10 mins at 300 mph less taxying, acceleration to speed time etc (Such as pointing in the right direction) = Effective 'Legal' Range of maybe something a wee bit short of say, 30 miles......

On a Good Day...….??

Yeah, I know, the longest journey starts with the first step...…..Hoo said that..??.

Good Luck, Cheeerrrsss…...

I'd like to see that!:-) I'm hoping that I get to see EP flight with a commercial application for the masses before they bury me! Somehow I think I'll be dead a LOOOOONG time before it ever happens!:-)

OOOPPPSSS...…. I almost forgot...….

From the photo, it looks to be a GENUINE "TAILWHEEL' too...…..Any 'Relation' / Connection, Mr Tailee…???

Cheeerrrsss…… And...…. A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...!!!

Me, a connection to Rollers? As a poor, self funded retiree and social reject, I can't even afford to look at a Roller or buy an e-bike.

But during my working life I owned seven aircraft (no tail draggers), five yachts and six sports cars.

The rest of my income I spent foolishly!

I think if one asked Air NZ and a few other customers, they'd want RR to get the turny, burny engine types right first...

Good god, look at all the naysayers here, did we all start the cynical pre-xmas drinking already? :P

Carbon Neutral is a very loose terms these days Tail Wheel, often something is Carbon Neutral by paying for offsets elsewhere, ie you're creating pollution doing something but pay to get a butt load of trees planted somewhere else to offset it. But they don't actually mention carbon neutral in here, just that the Aircraft itself will be zero emissions.

I for one am very excited to see RR putting their hand up in this area and pushing things forward, or rather ACCELerating it...little pun there if you read the article :P

Fixed it for you Taily....and a merry Christmas to you and yours.

Step 1: Build an electric aircraft
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!

It's life Jim but not as we know it.
...scrounging around for a charger.
...range anxiety.
...temperature anxiety.
...deep discharge anxiety.
...waiting to charge up.
...phantom drain.
...battery lifecycles.
...thermal runaway.
...dead cell.
...battery software management updates.
...can't hold enough charge.

Seems to be the opposite from the ICE where all the complexity is now with the fuel source rather than the motor.

I could go on but whilst these are valid points you bring up they already have their own versions when it comes to ICE as well. No one is claiming that an Electric Engine is going to be worry free but it certainly reduces a lot of potential acute mechanical possibilities but trades them for more chronic/long term ones which I'd personally rather as they're easier to anticipate and fix before they become big problems.

Some guy in Austria recently crashed his Tesla. The problem he faced: no scrapyard would take it as it's toxic waste.

EVs are just kicking the can down the road, but once that can hits the dead end, there's gonna be a huge "now what" question and nobody will want to take the responsibility.
