Mornington Peninsula Aircraft Haters.
 
This is why Australia doesn’t deserve an aircraft industry.

If I had my way, The Federal. Government, via CASA, would ban all air ambulance flights within the Mornington Peninsula Shire boundaries until all restrictions on Tyabb are permanently removed. I assume other Australian councils are equally bloody minded neanderthals.

From last week's Tyabb Flyer you will be aware we had, with encouragement from Shire staff, applied to MPSC to remove the redundant Church Hour from our permit as it has not been observed for more than 40 years and the church was sold 28 years ago.

In a turn-around, Council intended to impose excessively restrictive unrelated conditions to approve our application.
Our legal counsel had advised us to withdraw our application and refer the matter to VCAT which we have now done.
Therefore we have no option but to request no take offs or landings within that hour.

As a consequence :-
• We are considering opening the flying school at 7:30am on Sundays so as not to lose income from weekend flying.
• All aircraft returning to or arriving at the airport and unable to be on the ground before 9.30am will need to wait in a holding pattern on the dead (western) side over Boes Rd until after 10:30am.
• If you find yourself low on fuel you are required by the CARs to declare a Fuel May Day emergency and land.
• If you are planning a cross country flight departing on any Sunday between 9.30 and 10.30am, consider departing at least an hour early so as not to violate this time slot.

This situation is likely to remain unchanged until later in the year when VCAT hear the matter.

Flying early on Sundays is more likely to result in a petition from outraged residents to have even more onerous restrictions imposed. Like, maybe relocation of the airfield to Outer GAfa.
Those who meditate or pray or sing on Sundays, assorted horse owners, Greenies, vegans, drunks, skunks and plenty of others with a perfectly reasonable wish or need to have a sleep in, have little time for recreation flying as it is. They outnumber us, 1000 to one.
Don't poke the bear. Suck it up; it's only an hour and not a particularly inconvenient hour. For we atheists, Sunday morning is better spent with coffee and the newspaper anyway.

Sunny, civilised society does not work like that. There is only one valid reason to withdraw emergency services, and that is when their personnel are themselves endangered.
From reading Tyabb Airport's claim to 24 hour operations, it seems that there was tacit acceptance that the church hour would not be enforced. The advice merely discourages flying at anti-social hours but does not prohibit it....yet.
When VCAT hear this matter it would not be surprising if they removed the church hour limit from the books but made way for other parties to seek more restrictive hours of operation.
Stirring the possum usually has consequences.

One would have expected Tyabb would receive support from the rest of the industry. Seems i’m mistaken, or I don’t know the full story. I would have thought that setting restrictive precedents is not a good thing.

Guys we gotta remember most of the gen public hate light planes especially if they live near an airport. We are such a minority in the scheme of things, we are insignificant! Essendon. curfewed. Sydney the gateway to Australia, curfewed (disgraceful!) Gold Coast, curfewed, Adelaide, curfewed, we are lucky that not ALL airports of all denominations aren't curfewed!
We are a dying breed us plane lovers, enjoy it whilst ya can!

Guys we gotta remember most of the gen public hate light planes especially if they live near an airport
Yonks ago, there was a shortish runway 07 at Townsville with the takeoff flight path going over a close-in suburb called Belgian Gardens. In strong north-easterlies we were forced to use that runway for our Lincoln bombers. The Lincoln was a four engine tail dragger similar except bigger than the wartime Lancaster. Four Rolls Royce Merlins at full chat on take off were very loud I can tell you. On the days we used 07 we would get complaints from a local hypnotist that we were ruining his business. No sooner had he had plied his evil trade on a sweet young thing in his studio, when a Lincoln passing over his house at 200 feet would ruin the séance.

He complained bitterly to our Commanding Officer, an ex Beaufighter pilot who used to fly low level missions against the Japs in Timor during WW2. He didn't believe in political correctness. The CO was unsympathetic to say the least and told the hypnotist in no uncertain terms that the Air Force was there to defend the country and to stop bitching. The complaints continued so we were directed by the CO to deliberately hold down after take off from 07 rather then climb steeply for noise abatement. By doing that with great pleasure - who knows - we may have ruined the business of the hypnotist yet saved the honour of a few virgins..

If the original encouragement for the operator to challenge the Church Hour came from Shire Council staff, their motive should have been treated with deep suspicion.
Shire Councillors generally pre-occupy themselves with getting re-elected. Re-election often depends on making popular decisions; not necessarily wise decisions.
A case in point was Busselton, where Council attempted to ban all training flights. For a while this really inconvenienced a major segment of the GA industry which had long used BLN for navaid training. Because navaids are funded and maintained by Federal Government they did not completely succeed in the ban, but it was not from lack of trying. And it made them seem like the 'good guys' among the local anti-aviation horse owners and save-the-planet mob.
Sad as it is, any move to curtail those pesky bug smashers usually meets with majority approval in any town near an airport.

Mach E Avelli, I remember the YBLN situation well. I simply ignored them and went anyway. Frequent asymmetric training and students having some difficulty syncing props were commonplace. :ok:

Folks,
Many moons ago, QF would have one (and sometimes two) B707 flying at Avalon from 0600 to 2300K for around 40+ weeks per year.
There was a general prohibition on flying over Geelong Grammar School.
Needless to say, this was like red rag to a bull, many is the time 4 P&W JT3D-MC6 or -3B on meto power drowned out any alarm clocks at about 06.04K, 500 ft over said establishment, by that stage probably doing 250kt plus.
Certain kinds of "directives" do tend to be counter-productive.

Hey Centaurus, great story, keep them up. Sadly almost all these WW2 guys are dead. My uncle flew Beaufighters in PNG in WW2 (he was only 18, amazing) and he passed away in 2001. Sadly.

Article in todays Melbourne Herald Sun about it. The very small but very vocal minority in the area who have been agitating to have the airport closed down (or at the very least restricted in its operations) will be smugly celebrating this latest disruption. The fact that the airport supports a vibrant club, flying training school, maintenance operations, and facilities to support emergency services like police, fire fighting & ambos matters little to them and their selfish agenda. What a ridiculous situation to enforce a no flying curfew for a church that isn't even there anymore. If the purpose of pushing that barrow was to have a peaceful Sunday morning then the activists have kind of shot themselves in the foot, as flying will now commence at 7.30am instead of 9.00am. Well done d***heads.

It has been communicated that they are even complaining about the Police and Ambulance helicopters landing there, which is obviously either to refuel or to pick up/drop off patients.

That clearly shows how deluded they must be.

Even with the new Leonardo’s when they get them, the Police will still need to refuel there.

The proposed new rules about avoiding certain areas at certain times should only apply to places where current owners purchased their property before the airport was built. If they purchased after the airport was built - tough. They should have carried out better due diligence.

Pera, non sequiturs lead to thread drift.
For those of limited attention span, the subject here is Tyabb Airport today, not events from a time when there were few rules and even fewer consequences for flouting them.
Where we can learn from history, great, but tales of stirring up the locals back then only reinforces why aircraft noise rules were introduced.
Now, where is my shotgun?. A drone is within range....
