NZ PPL THEORY - SELF STUDY

Hi. Just wondering whether or not it's feasible/possible to do PPL theory via self-study (using the "Waypoints" or other publications) and pass the exams before undertaking any flight training?
Thanks in advance

Yes, just self study and get a few practice exams and you will be all good to go.

Just be aware that there isn't a Waypoints book currently for the human factors subject, although there is Ross Ewing's Aviation Medicine book which I think is still available but starting to get a bit out of date with the current syllabus. But per the above comment it is most definitely possible to self study the subjects and many people do. Many aero clubs and flying schools are also happy to hire their instructors out for one-on-one tuition if there's a particular element of the syllabus you are having difficulty with.

Yep I agree - completely doable.

I completed all of my exams using what are now the Waypoints series and Ross Ewing's book for human factors.

If you're worried about the currency of the content - the syllabus is available in Advisory Circular 61-3, APPENDIX II:

http://www.caa.govt.nz/assets/legacy...rs/AC061_3.pdf

That should indicate everything you need to know for each subject. Sounds tedious but works a treat.

Then all you have to do is sign up with Aviation Services Limited (ASL)/ASPEQ and book/sit exams as you see fit:

Good luck!

Thanks guys - really appreciate the info. I’ve sat my first exam (using a Waypoints guide) and scored a pretty decent pass. Good to know about HF and where to source the actual syllabus.
Again, thanks for your advice. Much obliged!
