Vale Bob "Bobo" Greenwood AFC former DCA Regional Manager Vic/Tas region

Heard that former DCA Vic/Tas Regional manager Bob Greenwood died in February this year. He was 83. Graduating as a Sergeant Pilot from RAAF Point Cook circa 1955, Bob was posted to Air Armaments School at East Sale, Victoria, where he flew Mustangs, Lincolns and Wirraways.

He rose in rank during his time in the RAAF with one posting being the Commanding Officer of a C130 Hercules squadron based at Richmond NSW. Bob was awarded the Air Force Cross during his service with the RAAF. He left the RAAF circa 1990 with the rank of Group Captain and joined the Vic/Tas Region of the Department of Civil Aviation until his retirement. He lived in the Melbourne suburb of Williamtown.

There was a few gentlemen in the regulator over the years, and Bob was one of them. Very professional and a pleasure to fly with. RIP

Bob was in the backseat when I done my NVFR rating test in the early 90’s. The testing officer was being assessed by Bob. Interesting experience as Bob absolutely hated flying around in SE aircraft at night, not to mention the fact that my night flying skills at the time had a lot to be desired. I subsequently passed albeit with a recommended from Bob that I do a solid remedial session of night circuits at a remotely lit location before I was let loose.

It was my first experience dealing with the regulator and in reflection Bob was an excellent examiner, not to mention a true gentleman. I often thought if Bob was still around. Sad news an he will always be remembered as a mentor in my mind.

I previously worked with Bob and he was a perfect gentleman, a very considerate human being and excellent pilot. Aviation needs more like him. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

He was my CO at Williamtown in the mid 1970s. I recall he used to have very shaky hands but as soon as he strapped into an aircraft he was as steady as a rock. He supported me and another boggie through a very nasty court of enquiry which even involved death threats without flinching. An excellent man .
