Bob was in the backseat when I done my NVFR rating test in the early 90’s. The testing officer was being assessed by Bob. Interesting experience as Bob absolutely hated flying around in SE aircraft at night, not to mention the fact that my night flying skills at the time had a lot to be desired. I subsequently passed albeit with a recommended from Bob that I do a solid remedial session of night circuits at a remotely lit location before I was let loose.

It was my first experience dealing with the regulator and in reflection Bob was an excellent examiner, not to mention a true gentleman. I often thought if Bob was still around. Sad news an he will always be remembered as a mentor in my mind.

He was my CO at Williamtown in the mid 1970s. I recall he used to have very shaky hands but as soon as he strapped into an aircraft he was as steady as a rock. He supported me and another boggie through a very nasty court of enquiry which even involved death threats without flinching. An excellent man .
