Private Charter quick question.
Folks I was wondering if anyone had a ball park figure on a 1200k private charter from vic to sa.
I want to take me and two dogs, commercial airlines, its just not worth the effort and risk. The complexities of various commercial aircrafts` pressurised cargo holds and limitations on cage sizes make it a royal pain in the arse to even begin to organise. I was thinking about $1 per km in a single, but then the aircraft has to get back to where it came from, weather etc. I want to go in March. Before you ask why I dont drive, its a house move, complicated enough as it is. I want to avoid a 14 hr trip in a truck if I can so I can beat the truck to the destination. |
I can't help with your Charter question....
However, have you spoken with JetPets. |
The complexities of various commercial aircrafts` pressurised cargo holds and limitations on cage sizes make it a royal pain in the arse to even begin to organise. Also it is quite cost effective if they travel with you, on the other hand if they travel as freight it is expensive. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....0995dc32f9.jpg |
Depends on where from Vic as well. Might have to factor in ferry charges if it’s from a regional location. |

Really? I find it strange that you say that. All of the holds are pressurised otherwise the floor would collapse. Usually at least one is air-conditioned, often the front, to suit carriage of live animals. If you think the size is limited then how do you think a single engine aircraft would carry the size? I have carried an amazing array of different animals/reptiles/birds over the years, all without an issue.

I dont want to waste time lecturing you, but if I have two dogs in two cages and another person has a large dog in a large cage, its not happening. |
1200km return trip
Working on a single doing 120 knots, thats a 5 hour trip 10 hrs @ $500 hour = $5K |

Now that is not going to happen - The federal hours-of-service rules do not specifically limit the distance that can be driven in one day, but they do limit the number of hours that can be spent driving, as follows:

1200K's one way is 650 Naughty miles, obviously not major center to major center? Return is 1300nm say around 11 hrs @ 2 miles per min + pilot costs & over night accommodation etc etc. Getting very expensive! Lear jet around $12K all up providing the Dep & Dest are reasonable size. You sure must love yr dogs!:-) Good luck:-)

Thanks for the robust replies, I knew I could count on all of you. Apologies for a typo, I meant to say $2 per km.
A few years ago I hired a single from Moorabbin to Sale and it was only $800 same day return in a single 4 seater Cessna. That was fun, the door didnt lock properly and as the aircraft was used for a lot of photo work, the window was dodgy too and blew open half way, So I had to try and shut this window that opened upwards, whilst not leaning on the door that was about to fly open too. All whilst worrying about how tight my seatbelt was. It was a lot of fun, the pilot couldnt do it for me. So you can see why I like flying so much.. So that was 400km as the crow flies or thereabouts so $2 per km with the pilot being paid instructor rates. Bend alot, the three dog example, perhaps I dint explain properly, I was tired. I was giving an example, of carrying pets in a commercial aircraft. The dogs are only 20kg each, I would stick em in a cage each in the back and away we go. When I paid the $800, a UBER was the same price, a pvt taxi same, they all charge abt $400 for 3 hrs driving all up, so I flew. So that is the reason I thought abt $2 per km which is $4800 which sounded reasonable to me. Thats the same cost to have a 20ft container freighted the same trip. $4800 is $1600 each. Given I have to pay for the return flight empty its only 800 each one way. The way I think which is good value for a pvt flight. Bendalot, the three dog example was given as an example of what can happen with a major carrier. If ten ppl want to fly their dogs on the one aircraft, its not happening. If Great Dane is already booked on your flight, a budgie aint going. So if the carriage of my dogs on same commercial flight cant be guaranteed the risk is increased, thats where the jetpets etc make their money. I am sure they are a fine organisation but when your labour costs are 40k a week and you lease several areas/properties thats a huge cost before you make a cent, so the profit margin has to be HUGE. Yes businesses have to make a profit. One of the pet transport organisers has a list of all the configurations on each type of aircraft in Australia and how many of what size cages they can take, oils aint oils. Get in plane, fly, have lunch, fly, get off. PIlot has a nice feed and a sleep in a motel, flies has lunch flies, goes home to bed. I thought that made sense. Blame CASA if it doesnt. The dogs are valuable, not only to me but commercially. Not Lear Jet value, but Cessna value for sure. The dogs would sit in a car all day, me backs rooted so I cant. |

100% spot on mate! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....bfb5797270.jpg |
I'd say you'd need a 206 at a minimum to facilitate you and your dogs. You might be able to cost share with a PPL? That would make it cheapest. They usually run at a charter rate at about $600 / hr

It has been 30+ years since I did something like this and no way would I ever repeat the flight.
I took a hunter and two dogs on a positioning flight and the stench from the dogs farts was unbelievable. I remember having my nose up against the open storm window for air. Good luck to whoever takes it on. |
