Deep Sadness
 

The pilot, my very dear friend James Derry lost his life after a forty year flying career in commerical GA. James had adjusted to ferry flying on reaching the 65 year of age limitation for public trasnport operations. A deeply sorrowful end to the life of a brilliant pilot, a gentleman with whom it was such a pleasure to fly and spend time with. Condolences to James loved ones and family.

Stephen, forgive me for raising this point at what is clearly a sensitive time for you, but I couldn't help noticing that the aviation-safety.net link a couple of posts before yours refers to the pilot in this accident as Norwegian: "The sole Norwegian pilot was missing and assumed to have died."

The name of James Derry doesn't sound at all Norwegian, so perhaps aviation-safety.net website have incorrect information? Do you, perhaps want to set the published record straight by contacting them? Just a thought ......

Yes Abbey Rd, James was Norwegian. Sadly there is no doubt about it, James sent me a copy of his FPL two days before the fatal accident. Seems to be case of pilot incapacitation during the flight at FL220 and I suppose the AP carried on. The only glimmer of comfort from the tragedy is that he would have gently fallen asleep doing what he enjoyed and did so well for so many years.

Used to fly on the Challenger 604 with James, always good times. He will be missed! I read that the report on his accident is expected 2nd Qtr this year;

Is built in supplemental oxygen standard equipment on the Caravan ?

I am pretty sure it is an option...of the seven Caravans I have flown only two had it installed. Five had no oxygen gauge, lever, lines, or ports whatsoever. One had the system installed at the factory but it was unservicable prior to being ferried to the operator in order to mount a cockpit voice recorder and FDR to comply with local regulations. For whatever reason that needed to be mounted in the same location as the Cessna oxygen bottle.
