The pilot should definitely buy a Lotto ticket after this one! Lucky escape for sure.

Oh boy, lucky one. Curious to know what made it catch fire as the article says he has just landed after flying a circuit round.

Totally agree with you on that. Would the ATSB investigate this incident?? OR will we never know why OR both?

You'd expect a fire after a circuit from a birds nest, although I didn't think it was birds nest season just yet.

I've been amazed, on a few occasions, how quickly birds can build nests on top of an engine. Anyone who doesn't open their engine compartment on their morning pre-flight would be IMHO very unwise.
(But I have no idea what caused the Warrior fire at YWBL.)

It's interesting too how they like certain aircraft types. We had a Warrior which would end up with a nest on a near daily basis, whereas they never went near the Cessna next to it.

no extinguisher in the aircraft?

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open for that on my next pre-flight checks!

No longer required

Birds have a long working day...up at 'sparrows' / picaninny daylight. 5 to 9 and lots of overtime.
In a parked up 182 a pair of Indian Mynahs only took a day and a half to put in a nest and a clutch of eggs way back under the top cowl.
With only a rudimentary DI it would have been a quick circuit and hard boiled eggs !!.

By the looks of the picture, the fire started on the left hand side of firewall, where the electric fuel pump is mounted, above the fuel bowl, because you can see the main concentration of burnt marks from there. Or maybe it was just an intense flame that was there, that spread back into cockpit with forward airflow directing back into cabin? just analysing.

It was an Act of God. The Aviation God! :uhoh:
