Squawk7700 28th Jan 2019 09:56

It has been a busy week in weather camera world with 5 new cameras installed.

Strathalbyn in South Australia are now up and running.

Olivea is a private strip north of Strathalbyn and is now also online (second camera coming soon)

Lady Barron on Flinders Island now has a north facing camera in addition to east and west.

Ballarat now has a new south-west facing camera to face the incoming bad (or good) weather.

Stay tuned as next week we have another 2 in Queensland, 2 in Victoria and shortly after, 2 very special ones in a remote NSW location.

You can make the text easier to read by inserting a black jpg before the met text and adjust the dimensions to suit. The first set of numbers is X and Y, the other is the size of the jpg (which is simply just some black pixels) and the last number (80) is the transparency.

$black = imagecreatefromjpeg('black.jpg');
imagecopymerge($image, $black, 270, 678, 0, 0, 765, 30, 80);

Hey Squawk,

Thanks mate. I did what you suggested and in this case this was a good solution to the image at Katoomba.

Things have been a little slow the last couple of weeks for new cameras, however things are picking up this and next week.

Caloundra are now online and coming to your favourite EFB soon compliments of the local Cirrus dealer and also GoFly Aviation in Caloundra.

Katoomba ! The good thing about this cam system is that historical time-lapse pics will show how fast the weather there can change. Its mountainous terrain weather so you can get blue sky one moment then cloud on the ground for the next half hour.
Why is it closed to fixed wing ? A rough surface or because someone had a surprise ?

Sunny Redcliffe YRED is now online for those heading to Brisbane that can’t afford the landing fees at the big Airport :-)

Redcliffe Cameras

This site has been a long time in the making in order to get the best results.

Thanks to the VERY generous Peter and Sharon of Waimarie Apartments on the very scenic Lord Howe Island, you can now enjoy pictures of a destination every pilot* surely must want to fly to. When I initially contacted them, Peter and Sharon were more than happy to install cameras for the use of pilots and airlines as they understand the weather challenges that pilots face when flying in and wanted to make a contribution to aircraft safety and flight planning for pilots. Please look them up if you're heading there and looking for some high quality accommodation.

There is no URL for these pictures as yet, however they will be appearing in your chosen EFB within the next few days.

Well done ! Looking these photographs made me realise I need a holiday !

2 of Ballarat's cameras will be offline until the internet provider () gets their act together and fixes the useless NBN that is providing the feed.

Squawk7700 6th Mar 2019 18:49

Thanks TNIP, I had noticed that recently and figured as much. It’s good that one of them is on a seperate connection which is still going strong.

Squawk7700 7th Mar 2019 01:04

Update: Lord Howe Island is now in both Ozrunways and Avplan. Redcliffe is also now in both. Stay tuned for many more.

Murray Bridge in sunny South Australia is now up with many thanks to the Airport owner / operator.

Weather Cameras

Two new sites have come online today.

Chapel Hill, just to the north west of Archerfield is up: (view only, not airport cameras)

http://auswebcams.com/ChapelHill

Also, Porepunkah is up, the gateway to Mount Hotham by road.

Weather Cameras

Both sets of cameras have been provided by fellow private pilots, for the benefit of others, including providing Telstra data plans worth $150 a year.

I don’t thank the hosts of these cameras enough publicly for their donations to all pilots. When you think about it, installing cameras at your own airport doesn’t help you much when you’re flying locally... it’s all about helping others that want to fly in to your airport and hoping that they will do the same for you at their airport.

There is also a new website that I have created. It is:

https://MyWebCams.com.au

This website hosts all of the airport cameras, as well as other scenery based cameras, including boats, farms and other locations.

This didn’t stop a 6 seater from landing a short time ago, nor the lightning on the airfield either!!

Be safe and make good decisions please ladies and gents!!

Meanwhile, at Lord Howe Island :-)

For those that haven’t noticed yet, Mildura has been added to the AirServices page and is thus far added in Ozrunways.

There are also additional cameras at Lord Howe Island currently available in Ozrunways. (I haven’t got an ETA for Avplan on those ones)

Thanks very much for this. There is something to be said for all the cameras being able to be accessed from one website, rather than have to hunt around multiple sites.

If that is legally possible ....

Some comments have be made re operations into an airport captured on video with ‘alleged’ less than ideal weather conditions... as judged by the viewer!

This throws up an absolute minefield, with a camera focused in one direction verses a pilots view of the overall field.

While these cameras have great benefits, it seems there could also be a downside.

In the situation above, it was a pilot onsite that mentioned to me about an aircraft landing in abhorrent conditions, so I screen captured for discussion purposes and posted it, with a de-identified aircraft type.

However you do raise a good point that they could be used for evil, however any authority would be hard pressed to achieve a successful conviction based on any of these images alone, unless there was a witness on-site. Lord Howe would be an interesting one in that regard because the height of those mountains is well known in reference to the minimas, and those 8 or so camera angles on-site won’t miss much.

Theoretically what should count in an operational situation re forward visibility is the pilot's view (e.g. down a runway), not someone or something else's view elsewhere on the airport.
