ATPL and IREX self study
 

Hi All,

I’m looking to begin self study for ATPL theory exams and the IREX theory exam in the next month or two (obviously not all at once) and just looking for any recommendations of good study material for these exams.

I know Bob Tait, ATC and some others put out books for each, but mainly just seeking some advice and feedback from those who have done it or currently doing it about the best course of action. Also any tip or tricks and anything to look out for when studying ATPL and IREX.

Definitely agree with this one.

Did mine about 5 years ago with nothing more than Bob Tait's book and got around 95%. His online practice exams are definitely worth it as well.

Also suggest you might pick up the ATC instrument rating theory book as well. Bob Tait's book is perfect if you just want to pass the exam (and he has a very good simplistic way of explaining the theory), reading the ATC book afterwards gave me a better overall picture of everything before jumping into training for the instrument rating.

Bob Tait + ATC worked well for my IREX.
For ATPL self study I used Rob Avery + Oxford. Oxford set of books gives you a sound theory foundation, so read it first. Some of Oxford books are not relevant (e.g. Air Law), but most of them are (Aerodynamics and AGK are the same all over the world). Rob doesn't give you lots of theory, but he's much focused on the exams and has many practice tests, which are quite close to CASA's ones.

Flight Standards in Darwin offer a “virtual classroom” IREX course, presented by well regarded theory instructor Andrew Baumanis, which means you can stay at home (where ever you might be) and interact live in the class via Skype.

Might be a useful adjunct for self study, if you want an “assist” in your preparation for this exam...
