Online Vintage and Warbird Auction - Archerfield

Apparently seized by the Commonwealth under the Proceeds of Crime Legislation, along with 4 hangars, 2 houses and a Mercedes Benz.

Vintage and Warbird Auction Archerfield

Online bidding only: starts 9am 5th May AEST and ends 5pm 30th May

De Havilland DH-82A Tiger Moth VH-WEM
1993 YAK-3M VH-YZK
1983 YAK 50 VH-YAX
1944 North American T6 (SNJ-5) VH-USN
1985 YAK-50 VH-YAY

It's been reported that 10 aircraft were seized including a Decathalon and a Sea Fury, but only five are listed. The Sea Fury would be the prize I'd guess.

Wow - that's taken a long while to come to market, guess it was held up in the courts. I thought all of this finalised maybe 8 years ago.

Sounds like it's the collection formerly owned by Steve Hart. He ran a large accounting practice that did a lot of dodgy tax work. Cost the ATO > $200m.

He battled the gov for years, but eventually, as the song goes "... I fought the law and the law won ...".

Interesting thing if that all of these aviation assets had been put into an "aviation museum" trust, but I guess the courts saw thru this and grabbed the lot.

In the end I think Steve got done for peripheral charges like insurance fraud. He was 4 years into a 5 year sentence when the gov came back with more charges - which is a sign the gov is really out to get you!

Hmmm... so we might get an inline Yak 3 and a Seafury back in Oz sky's. Something to compete against that worlds fastest 'round' Yak.....

..So when do the air races start.....:E

Four hours to go!

So, will the Melbourne money out-do the Brisbane money, or maybe an outsider...;)

'Kiwiland' would be nice...at least we can go and visit....and 'drool' over....

Kiwiland would be nice as I never got to see this Yak-3 the first time round, except in videos and books!

So what is the outcome of these birds, what did they go for?

Flying Binghi 1st Jun 2017 02:35

DH82 - $69,000
Yak #16 - $32,500
Yak #17 - $20,000
Yak 3M - $335,000
T6 - $120,000

KiwiBoyZac 1st Jun 2017 03:10

Wow! So they all sold?

Ovation 2nd Jun 2017 02:37

DH82 - $69,000
Yak #16 - $32,500
Yak #17 - $20,000
Yak 3M - $335,000
T6 - $120,000
These numbers match my source, but whether they met the somewhat high reserve prices and sold at close of bidding is uncertain. If they don't meet reserve the auctioneer contacts the highest bidders and tries to squeeze them for a little bit more.
