I think Spodman has nailed it - but as I keep trying to get across CASA and Airservices are only extensions of the Federal Government. Neither has any will to do anything that they are not ordered to do by the Minister through the DIRD. Their senior management left alone they will naturally be attracted to the line of least resistance - what is it that the Minister wants - peace and quiet, Cabinet promotion and to be re-elected. Why does anybody think this is anything to do with aviation

And why shouldn't they? From what I can gather on the R/T, Approach is twice as hard as Enroute. If they're rated for Approach, pay them for it! :=

Part of the reason they can do it in the States is the size of the sectors. It would surprise many of you how big some of the sectors in Australia are. Approach controllers in Australia get paid the same as En-Route controllers.

Approach get paid the same as Enroute and Tower controllers. As an Approach controller, I think I'm worth more. Back in the 1990's, the complexity of Approach was recognised and we got more. For some reason, radar towers got the same. Enroute and Tower now welcome to have their say. :O:O:O

So is the FAA system safer because they can afford more and smaller sectors ?

I know that rather than be given traffic on three or more other aircraft when in IMC in a terminal area I would prefer to be separated by trained ATC. Why have them just to give traffic that we already new about? Waste of money in many cases!

As an en-route controller (ex :}) I never expected the same money as an approach controller. To some extent it sort of destroyed the career path. There's something to be said for working your way up the pay grades. When equal pay came in movement to and from the sectors started to stagnate, that's when some of the morale issues started I reckon!

Safer Dick? Dunno. One thing's for sure though, ASA will never be able to reduce sector sizes, they will never be able to staff them. They can't replace retirements let alone staff new sectors.

I am new to this thread and wonder if Dick is the same Mr Smith who forced Minister A. to introduce airspace change 10 years ago which almost resulted in two mid air collisions? Fortunately Airservices Board called for a review and rolled back the change. The alternative facts look remarkably similar so I conclude it's the same person.

However, we don't make progress just throwing mud - let's be constructive. Sorry Mr Smith - I breeched my own rule, aviation safety management does need qualitative assessment and all opinions are needed and valued.
But ADSB is here to stay - the capability improves efficiency and safety. So let's start at the structural level. The OAR CASA decides when the level of airspace risk warrants a service or airspace change.

Just because Airservices can see all aircraft doesn't mean they should provide a particular service other than when a risk based assessment concludes they should. I concede that having introduced a mandate requiring me to fit 1090ES when I fly once a year to mandate airspace, is a little annoying. But we should work with Airservices to develop a monitoring regime without usurping our responsibility for see and avoid - added eyes and situational awareness is all we need - and a call for help and location when required. Whether Controllers apply 5nm or 3nm separation is irrelevant - only is high density approach phase is 3nm remotely needed.

I'm used to flying TISB FISB with UAT which is great but it's not going to happen here - Nor should it, hugely expensive option when we have an Industry and a Regulator with a very professional approach. Stirring up Senators who relish the opportunity, regardless of the facts, to score points, is pointless. I'm sure many get vicarious pleasure watching this sport but we don't make progress. The issue needs leadership.
