Free iPhone advert

Hi all,

Not aviation related by pprune related.

I keep getting popups on my iPhone when viewing the pprune site. 90% of the time it's a link to a "win a iPhone 7" and occasionally it's a "win a Jetstar travel voucher". I can't use the back button to return to pprune as these sites override the pprune page.

Has anybody else had this problem? If so, any ideas on how to stop it happening?

Jabberwocky82 28th Oct 2016 23:12

Try going in to settings>general>safari and 'clear history and website data'.
If that doesn't do it go in to general>reset 'reset network settings'. You will lose all of your stored wifi passwords and such but hopefully should stop the pop ups.

I referred your question to our technical guys. Will post any reply here.

Gut feeling this has to do with a bug with google ads in the mobile version of the website. Same thing here with HTC running chrome but a popup from mobiblitz. The usual clearing of cache etc may have a temporary effect but I've seen other reports of it happening to fresh restores...

May even be when scrolling threads on the mobile platform?

Yes, I've had this problem for a week or two now, only when on PPRuNe and only when using a mobile device for browsing, never on the desktop machine. The selected forum page has some sort of instant redirect to a scammy page and brings up a popup window that wont let you do anything apart from clicking on its one button, theres no way I'd do that, and cant even go back to the previously viewed page. Occasionally quickly hitting "back" while the redirect is just starting to happen takes me back to the forum page, but Im almost instantly redirected again to a different scam site and popup that locks up my browser.
Jabberwocky82's solution after forcibly killing the browser instance lets me get my browser functionality back but only until the next time I visit PPRuNe on the mobile browser, then it starts all over again.

No answer yet from the experts.

I don't like or use the PPRuNe mobile version on my iPhone. There is a button there somewhere that redirects back to the full PPRuNe site.

This isn't a bug with PPrune, but a known issue with "some" ads, whereby they are coded to redirect you to another site. ISTR There was a news.com.au article on it a couple of months ago and most times the Advertising brokers don't even know it is going on... Some scams then redirect you several times resulting in the "back" button having no effect. Gumtree is the same, I often get these ads there.

The solution to this, if you are running Android, is to long-press the Back button, and it should open a list of the last half-dozen or so pages you've viewed, and you can then reselect the Prune page you wanted to see in the first place.

Tail, it occurs in the "full" version of the site when using an iPhone.

If you aren't quick enough to hit the back button when an ad comes up, double click the main button, close the browser, reopen the browser and then you'll have the short chance to hit back, if not then close and reopen. You might have to try and hit the back button rapidly and repeatedly.

Deleting files etc doesn't stop the ads from popping up.

So far most of these sorts of pop ups only occur on the phones rather than tablets or computers.

Apparently a few people on the Middle East forum were having the same problem and one of them recommended https://getadblock.com/
I've installed it on my iPhone and so far the problem has been completely removed. Prior to installing it PPRuNe was virtually unusable, maybe 50-60% of forum pages loaded would get a redirecting full-screen ad requiring a browser shutdown - since installing it, no problems at all. Maybe there's something dodgy in the ads being served up on the forums.

From a PPRuNe Administrator:

We have paused one of our mobile ad networks -- please let me know if the mobile ad hijacks continue tonight and tomorrow, or if they seem to have stopped...

Don't know now. I used the getadblock as mentioned in post #9.
Also loaded it onto my laptop. Haven't seen an ad since.

Cheers W

It's something on your phone or computer. It works fine on all of my computers and different browsers.

IBobi 2nd Dec 2016 19:46

If you're still seeing ads on *mobile* that are hijacking your browser away from PPRuNe, please let me know.

At this time we are *only* dealing with ads on mobile, which are hijacking the mobile experience. You will need to post/send a screen shot so we are sure we are talking about the same thing (the mere presence of ads on mobile is not the same thing) Thank you!

Still happening...

Where do you want the screenshots sent to?
