R.A. "Bob" Hoover dead at 94
The great Bob Hoover has passed away at age 94. The epitome of an aviation legend, a kind and thoughtful gentleman.
Proud to have had him as a friend... All interested in aviation should read his book.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Forever-Fly.../dp/067153761X RIP and blue skies... also:http://aviationweek.com/blog/hoover-...ers-airventure |
A extremely capable pilot, possibly "The best" if there is such a person. Very modest too.
|
The Ace of the base, no question.
Saw and met with a few times...Avalon, Valley field (LST) and OSH. His flying of the Shrike was always beyond belief. A night with Bob & Chuck Yager at the theatre in the wood at OSH will always be remembered. Blue skies forever - RIP |
This golden era of aviation is almost over, quite sad really. There are almost no barriers left to conquer.
What an aviator :D |
Respect
Watched in awe, spoke, drank beer, soaked in the awesomeness. Was very priveleged to be within a prop width. Godspeed legend of the excess surplus thrust horsepower!!

To the "Master of Energy Management". May the wind be on your tail and the sun shall never set on your eternal journey.
It was my privilege to meet Mr. Hoover in South Florida in the 1970s. Great stories,... great adventures.... great guy. They aviation world didn't loose a treasure, as his memory will live on. |
He scared the CFI witless with his check ride takeoff at Essendon, prior to the Avalon airshow. Poor old Jan (Yarn) had never lifted off using undercarriage retraction before.
|
A rarity he were - an old bold pilot..
|
Our flying school had a film night(real film not VHS tapes)in the early 80's, the CFI had a mate in the Qantas film library and they got hold of the promotional film done by Rockwell starring Bob Hoover in the AC500 doing his energy management routine!
Always liked the way Bob poured the iced tea while doing aerobatic routine. RIP Bob. |
He was better than the rest of us will ever be...

Always the picture of sartorial elegance, Bob Hoover has just flown an aerobatic routine in the Sabre at Reno in September 1974. While most pilots given the opportunity to fly a Sabre would opt for the coolest Top Gun gear, Mr Hoover's only concession to the Reno heat is to remove his jacket. RIP |
