RAAF Richmond For Sale

Article in Friday's The Australian has RAAF Richmond and Laverton possibly being placed up for sale.

Perhaps the government are going to make it into a new centre for GA in the Sydney basin?

Badgery's Creek

Would it not be logical to use Richmond as the new Western Sydney Airport instead of putting billions into Badgerys Creek? See link http://westernsydneyairport.gov.au/f...ort_for_WS.pdf

No, absolutely not. Richmond has got a 7,000 ft runway (one thereof, 10/28) and no undershoot/overshoot to speak of and no buffer zone. When the RAAF were operating the B707s out of Richmond they had to ferry to SYD and depart from there if they wanted to get away with any vaguely approaching reasonable fuel and pax load.
There were a number of occasions when either the RAAF or the USAF came close to putting a C130 or a C141 into the local houses.

Not a bad idea, since the opportunity was lost at schofields. Already has it's own block of airspace and all.

The runways at Laverton are long gone. Richmond is too great an asset to loose, especially if Bankstown ceases to be an airport.

A C-5 was even more fun!

Part of what was RAAF Laverton's airfield may soon be up for sale.

The Masters store in the SW corner.

There is plenty of room for quad 3500m runways in the 05/23 direction if you take the area between the river and existing Hawkesbury Valley way. Roughly plotted, a pair of runways either side of the existing RAAF Richmond Base. Thee will be some infill required to level the flood plane, maybe even a need to deviate the river so you can have round the end taxiways.

For a departure in the 23 direction you have 8nm before meeting the high (well what we call high- I'm sure the Europeans would laugh at us) terrain. RNP standard departures would easily fix that.

The technology is there, there is a massive need for landfill sites in Sydney. We just need the will.

Of course, it will never happen as we have become a nation that lost it's innovation in the 60's.

We'd rather form another expensive committee and start yet another inquiry than get on with the job here. We whine about China and other however when it comes to important infrastructure kaboom - build it in no tome flat.

Get Mr Wagner from QLD to do it. He got Brisbane West Wellcamp built and operating with RPT Dash8 and up to 747 freighters in 18 months! He was told it couldn't be done.
